But why the Bucks’ interest then?
And if TA was always coming back and another move isn’t coming why would Coffey see opportunity to make the roster?
I’ve come around to thinking he really might not have had a guaranteed deal anywhere else but it’s still curious.
Just like the Bucks spending $800K to push Ajax’s guarantee date back if TA was just going to get that spot.

teagues comments on that podcast that was posted here recently really prove that once and for all. that was powerful for me. if you support giannis in bucks green and treasure his unbridled loyalty to us as it appears then we have to give him thansis. its not like lebron recruiting this guy or that....or jordan demanding my boy rusty larue because of the cards and the golf.....thansis is family. hes the franchise consigliere. giannis = the franchise.... and family and loyalty IS his brand. thanasis comes with that and i love it
we need to all remember that it was thanasis that convinced him to sign the last extension too if i remember. to me this is mandatory if we want a giannis extension

TA wasn't going to automatically get the spot. They had to develop plausible deniability he's an NBA player from his int'l play. 800k was an acceptable trade-off. It's a few times more if they straight waive a player. And they can still maybe trade him into an exception.
Why the Bucks' interest in Coffey? Cuz it's a camp deal. There's no risk. On Coffey's part, that was around his demand in the league, after making every squad worse for 6 years, then having his minutes disappear ala Ajax. While he probably looks at our sf room and thinks he can beat some out.

I squandered an asset? Then Hammond taught me well.

Kuzma/Bobby/Anyone + 1 1st for Siakam.
Indiana is already punting this season and Siakam is 31. I think they are hanging onto him for now just to save face / sell tickets but if it's looking bad in January it makes a lot of sense for them to trade him and go for a top 5 pick.

We're at the point in the league where there are a lot of viable guys outside the league, and given the overall salary crunch many teams are feeling, it no longer feels trivial be paying 5m to a 23 y.o. who hasn't shown a lot. If there's a guy out there who hasn't hit yet but you believe in, could be a good opportunity.
As another example, looking at Salaun, who I liked coming out (Ersan-esque) -- he's making 8m this year. Hornets are probably fine with that but I can't see where he'd have any trade value, even as a 20 y.o. who was a recent 6th overall pick.

Maybe you get pick(s) attached even.
Maybe you could package him w/ Ajax because we'd get off his little $ but it wouldn't discernibly dilute the return like Kuzma. You're just asking to get some underwhelming, grass is greener on the other side, buy higher SF option to come back, while losing Green for basically nothing.
And if the Bucks, by over-stuffing their roster 1st, boxed themselves in to a pre-ordained 2-for 1 trade, killing leverage even further, they're being foolish. They had to already have determined they're willing to waive Ajax &/or Smith if need be.
