Re: [Shams] PJ Washington extends with Dallas 4/90
I think if Luka were still on the team, PJ would still be worth a lot more than this - like 5~ million more a year maybe.
As is, I think this is most likely still a good value contract. Really good two way player through his prime.. At least makes us Dallas fans happy for a second..
It’s not too late for an AD trade and tank still now that this is done.

This season is going to be such a disaster for this deal. Not because this is such a horrible contract, but because the Mavs are doubling down on guys who don't fit together. What's their starting 5 going to look like? AD, Lively, Flagg, PJ, and Russell? Not only will that line-up not work, but Klay will be unhappy. If the plan is to bench PJ, that will nerf his performance and his contract will be harder to trade.

Texas Chuck wrote:I mean based on that playoff run I get why Dallas did this. But if Cooper isn't a star, they are loading up the roster with a lot of contracts for solid but not really difference making players which combined with not controlling their own picks will have them in just no man's land.
Like everything else it comes down to AD/Kyrie health and level of play in the next 2 seasons and Flagg beyond that.
But with them trying to win now, better to have him than not. And now if they want to start Christie or Klay to let Flagg start his career in a more natural position or to get more consistent shooting on the court, they can without worrying about how it impacts future contract talks.
Don't get it really for PJ. I think a deal like this is still waiting for him in a year. But locking up a bunch of money can never be terrible I guess.
Dallas right now kinda feels like the Heat when they were in the doldrums to me, although they have some centerpiece players. Lot of awkward parts and good not great guys, at least until they get the AD/Kyrie duo online. And even then I'm really not sure of the fit.
This is a solid deal in a vacuum, but it feels like a transition year for a franchise that can ill afford one.

It's fine. Number's probably fair. I'll echo everyone else that I don't know that I love Dallas locking this up when AD/Kyrie are questions long-term, but I get it. I don't hate it. It's not an albatross, etc.
My selfish side note from this is....Well, maybe Indy can talk Aaron Nesmith into signing that extension after all?

My selfish note is that this may be another contract that is about what Blazers should pay Camara - is my thinking reasonable?

Maybe. But, Camara is still “younger in the league”. His agent is gonna argue “he can become anything offensively still!” And, he’s already got an all defense team nod, which is much more than PJ has ever had.

Re: [Shams] PJ Washington extends with Dallas 4/90
yeah the only major thing on the PJ Washington resume is he was the series swinger the last time a team could take 4 of 7 from OKC. And really was good that whole playoff run. Having that proof of playoff concept is nice, but his RS career has been marked with inconsistency.
Mavs fans love him for that whole stand on business moment but I think that moment/series has probably had us overvalue him, myself included.

This is a great point. PJ has been one of those guys who I have valued higher than his numbers tell me I should; players who, in the moment, I'm fine with defending the inflated perception, but it's also a position more likely to burn me in the end.

A lot of players asking for 30M per has taken / is going to take QO. E.g. Cam Thomas, Kuminga, Giddey, Grimes etc. I think none of them could get more than 20M per. The contract is about right for PJ. But in open market, PJ is possibly not getting as much as the Mavs has paid. The cap rooms have been significantly dropped this offseason. Even teams with significant cap space will think twice overpaying players. To me, I think PJ is possibly getting 20M per in open market. Aaron Gordon is only getting 20M per during first seasons with Nuggets. Surely, Aaron Gordon is way more impactful players on the floor.

Re: [Shams] PJ Washington extends with Dallas 4/90
Solid player, solid deal in a vacuum. But he's a tough roster fit there and I expect him to look "meh" this year. My guess is that he gets traded this time next year and someone gets him for what will be a very fair price because the acquiring team will be adding him on account of him being a good roster fit coming off what will likely be a down year. BUT, it will still be positive value so this is a good move for DAL to lock that up as he'll get more via trade next year in that situation than now as an expiring player.

I like him more than I thought, this is a good contract, many teams could use his game, Dallas likely did this considering that if things are doing good and the fit works, they got a great deal, if the team needs something different he is easily moved honestly

The roster is imbalanced for sure. It will help if Flagg really can steal minutes at a nominal 2 next to PJ, but I have some serious spacing doubts about those lineups.
Not sure it means PJ is the guy who ultimately gets moved. He's far more versatile for instance than Gafford. Or maybe they move Lively while he still holds value and let AD play half the game at center as he should. Or maybe this team is terrible and Nico gets fired and AD gets traded.
But unless Lively/AD/PJ/Flagg can make an elite defensive even with subpar perimeter defenders, I expect the Mavs to be pretty terrible until Kyrie returns. They look like a very hard-scoring team and unless one of the new assistants is an offensive wizard I don't trust this staff to scheme them out of that issue.

Re: [Shams] PJ Washington extends with Dallas 4/90
I like PJ. Good role player. I don't like that contract though. To me that's too much in general for the type of player he is.
And I particularly don't like it for Dallas. I just don't get what they are doing from a salary or team building stand point. They've just felt terribly run since making their finals run. Giving those contract extensions to Gafford and PJ without a clear idea of what their rotation looks like just feels questionable, and I don't see them as more valuable trade pieces than when they were expiring.
