Brooklyn has less than $9m in cap space right now. Add that to Cam’s salary of $6m, and they can take back $15m or so, when Thomas is tradeable midseason.
So, no.
Midseason, Brooklyn could legally trade Mann/Highsmith to get Simons. Move Highsmith to a 3rd team as part of the deal, and Boston gets JUST UNDER the tax line, I believe.

That I didn’t know. I still think he should’ve taken it even if it was a team option.
Next years free agent class not being good, doesn’t mean anyone is paying him big.. Expect him to be looking at full MLE offers. And that be pretty comparable to just getting the money now..
I think having control over your future means a lot to people, much more than some think. The difference between having say 10 mil over 5 mil probably does not impact your life. But controlling where you live, where your family lives, what type of situation or organization to play for can have a big impact on things.
I don’t normally disagree with any of that. But this isn’t a guy that wanted to leave the city or team, right?
The reports aren’t that he wants antes out of Brooklyn, just wasn’t happy with the money as far as I know.. He just wanted to get paid like the guards he thinks rivals. Green, Simons, etc.
And maybe next year he’ll come out and play a way that gets him the money he feels he is worth.

1 yr 14M guaranteed + potentially 14M/1 yr more
vs
6M guaranted + potentially 60/4 in a full MLE contract
if he really thinks he can fetch MLE then i can see why he forgo 8M now to get more guaranteed $ next year

This one always made less sense than Kuminga or even Giddey.
Did he not just watch an entire summer of guys like himself getting tossed around for chump change?
At least Kuminga is a 6'8 uber athletic forward. Those guys get paid no matter what.
Thomas will regret it and it will be used as an example why players shouldn't take the QO, but realistically he just didnt read the leaves.

I've seen $19-$22mil in practical cap space. It supposes Zaire Williams, not yet officially signed, is signed with the room exception. It also likely requires a bunch of non-guaranteed deals. Bobby Marks has the Nets at $22.4mil in space.

Does this matter? You have Bird rights as long as you haven't changed teams as a free agent, no? Is there some special case for qualifying offers?

You lose your bird rights if you sign a one year deal and then get traded.

nets withdraw offer for Zaire and Celtics trade Anfernee Simons for Cam straight up. Cam agrees because he's gonna take Jrue's minutes for Boston
any interest??

Why on earth would the Nets do that straight up? They want picks or young players they value. That's not Simons. They also don't need to withdraw the offer for Zaire. He just can't sign it until after they use the rest of their cap space.

Because he'd come with bird rights and could slot in as a scorer/finisher. Part of the development for PG and facilitators is surrounding them with NBA level talents so they have a framework to develop. And then at the deadline or offseason you have optionality with Simons that is kaput with Cam now that he's taken the QO
Plus, Cam is completely unhinged about his value and his bird rights don't transmit, so you cant get better value in trade. And as for lending out your cap space, there is more value in putting NBA players on the court with Traore, Demin, etc than getting another couple of 2nds, seconds are borderline worthless when you are going from 22 future seconds to 24 future seconds, there's not much utility there.
And lastly, why keep an unhappy Cam Thomas to play out the string and poison the vibes in the locker room. And, obiouvsly, Cam would have to agree to such a trade... but you asked why, so there is the why

lol, the hilarious thing is I was going off of his own work at Spotrac, but he hasn’t updated it correctly, and he has guys double listed.
Don’t know if I should take Smitty’s word on his website? Or on his Twitter?

Cam can’t be traded until December 15. Brooklyn has to be above the salary cap floor by opening night, leaving roughly $15.5m as the max cap space into the season.

That could work, actually. Cam would get to just flame it from all over all year in Boston. He would agree to that deal, too, I think. The problem is the Nets need to get over the floor now and Cam isn't tradable until January 15th I believe?
PG and 5 2nds for MPJ?

12/15, since they're ending up under the salary cap after signing the contract with a more than 20% raise. So it's not a full BYC type contract.

Boston should do the SImons for Thomas trade but waive and stretch him right away.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

tcheco wrote:so he expects to get over 20M per year next offseason? on at least 2 year deal? 46M in 3 years if thats the case
Had he accepted 28 in 2, would take 18M starting salary on his next contract to match that.
Not sure I can see a team willing to pay him 20M per year considering contracts given around the league. the 2/28 seems like a safe bet, my guess is that he is looking for more than 20 per year going forward, but a serious injury can cost him dearly.
He can score, but not much more than that... Naw got 15AAV, FVV got 25 sure but he brings more to the game than Cam, but no upside, sure...
This could be bad for him honestly, but kudos for the confidence
Yeah, he might play himself into a longer deal, but at a similar number. So something like what Walker-Alexander got (4-years, $62M). That's probably the best-case scenario. Caris LeVert just got 2-years, $29M from Detroit. Gary Trent Jr and Malik Beasley have been playing for single-digit millions on short-term deals. Plenty of vet guards are playing for the minimum or near it, like Westbrook, Clarkson, Bradley Beal, Eric Gordon...etc which brings down the price for scoring guards.

Warrriors fans are delusional. Kuminga as a 6’8” forward is getting paid. Guys like him are too rare.
