Cam's QO: How to Proceed

Post#1 » by ecuhus1981 » Thu Sep 4, 2025 2:57 pm

Good morning, fellow Nets fans. Well, Cam Thomas has gone and signed his 1-yr $6mil qualifying offer. We can argue about whether this was the right move, but here we are.

What do you think the Nets should do with him? Cam's QO has a no trade clause, meaning he had to agree to any deal this season. He probably doesn't want to siphon value from any team to whom he's traded, so essentially his trade value is zero. He will become an unrestricted free agent next summer, and we will not retain his Bird rights (to go over the cap to match whatever another team offers him). We might have capspace next summer, but it would be up to Thomas to decide to stay even if we offered to dollar, and I don't think he will choose to return after not getting the contract he wanted this summer.

The way I see it, there is no point in playing him this season, at all. All he would do here is shoot at every opportunity, an even more selfish version of the player he's already shown to be. He thinks that that is his path to a big next contract, but all it will do is take shots and development away from our younger players. Order him to stay home and he can join free agency in 2026 after being off this season. It's not spite, it's business, he doesn't add value to us in the short term, and there's nothing we can gain from developing him or putting his wares on display.

What do you think?

I think it's bad for Cam and it's bad for us. I just hope it doesn't somehow turn into a circus. I don't know how far apart both party's were.

I agree there is very little motivation to play him and not develop the younger players. It will be interesting to see where he ends up in the future and for how much.

The two are stuck with one another. Cam's best bet is to ball out to retain his bird rights giving him more options in free agency... The Nets can't really get anything in a trade for him, and don't necessarily have players capable of stepping in to fill his role as chucker-point-getter, so while I suspect their leash will be shorter with him I'd imagine he still gets minutes in a lost year.

Let him audition for 25 minutes per game, and play the rookies the rest of the time.

Most of us like Jordi as a coach so the chances are that we will be a bit better than advertised

Unfortunately, that’s the difference between being worst in the league and 4th worst

Who really gives a fk so long as the ping pong balls go our way?

the odds are hardly different between worst and 4th worst so it's irrelevant.

the way this all worked out is ideal, the player is motivated to stay healthy/earn a big FA contract, and that's probably what's best for the team too. It is possible Cam's price is in excess of whatever he could have been signed for now, but if his ask was really $30m then they have very little to risk.

and if it all blows up and falls apart, they get the higher odds.
