GSW are not sabotaging Kuminga... their current offer is more than he's worth. If he was a $30m player, teams would absolutely be willing to give up a 1st and a prospect to get him. All 29 other teams passed on him this summer. Yes, he comes at a price, and it was universally decided that he isn't worth that price. A price set by him and his agent; a price that every GM in the league knows is ludicrous.
And to be clear, Kerr didn't sit him to be vindictive and he won't be vindictive if Kuminga signs the QO. Kerr sat Kuminga because he is a terrible decision maker. Kuminga can get a bucket and is a solid individual defender, but the team-D and team-O breaks down when he's on the floor. Everything the GSW do is based on team schemes, and Kuminga has failed to be a productive part of that. And before you say that Kerr hasn't given him the opportunity: Kuminga has played over 6,000 minutes for Kerr. He knows exactly what Kuminga brings and what he is worth.
That's half truth! He is a restricted free agent, and teams are leary of tying down an offer to a restricted agent that the initial team might match, thereby making them lose other viable players they could've signed. There is a reason the Warriors are refusing to make the 2nd year a player option. Alot of teams have cap space next year and they know they run the risk of losing him to those teams. The Suns and Kinds had a sign and trade package for him that the warriors refused.
Saying he is not well in tune with the warriors play is aderservice to him, and to be quite frank,a bad look for the warriors for not having a good developmental program. Didn't they just drafted a bust as a center just before Kuminga? Kuminga was one of the most consistent player in the playoffs last season when they gave him tangible minutes. This is just sour grapes. He is leaving, and they know it. Let's discuss this next summer when he finally get signed by a team.
I think only BRK had the $30m of cap space available to give Kuminga what he was asking for. But even if there were 20 teams with cap space, making an offer on a RFA only ties up your cap for 48 hours. Not really an issue after the first few hours of free agency. We are months in at this point.
Since no one had cap space, any conceivable deal would need to be done via sign & trade. It is not GSW setting the pice: Kuminga is setting his price at $30m. Any team that wants Kuminga has to send $30m back to GSW, and it has to be contracts that are worth $30m (+tax) to GSW. It has to be better than letting Kuming walk for nothing. My guess is that WAS could get him for CJ McCollum ($30m expiring), a 1st and a former 2nd round pick. If its a player like Rozier ($27m expiring), it would take better compensation because CJ could play important minutes and Rozier is essentially dead money. Either way, the issue is that no team is willing to give Kuminga $30m
and give GSW something worth the $30m they would have to spend on the deal... and don't forget the tax that GSW would be paying by bringing in a $30m player.
As far as the one year deal: GSW won't give Kuminga a player option after one season because the only reason they are keeping him at all is for trade value. Why give him an extra $15m this season to be in the same situation they will be in if he signs the qualifying offer? What is Kuminga giving back in that negotiation? This isn't a charity!
To act like Kuminga gets nothing out of this is disingenuous. If GSW rescind the qualifying offer, Kuminga will end up playing for whatever portion of the MLE his chosen team has left. He needs to work with GSW on a S&T if he wants to get anything close to what he's asking for, and clearly, his asking price is too high!
On development: The GSW have been to the Finals six out of the past eleven years. With winning comes later draft picks. But you don't win without development. Podz looks good; Moody looks OK; Wiggins was a bust until he got there. They do alright. If anything I would say their scouting dept needs work. Wiseman has since failed on two other teams. I suspect that Kuminga will eventually land somewhere that he thinks is a better fit, but I doubt he will ever get it together between the ears.... It is this doubt that has rival GMs unwilling to meet his asking price.
