Why do most people just accept that Kobe is the greatest Laker of all time?

I really think most people who too young and never saw Magic play AND most fans who value scoring more than anything else would put Kobe ahead of Magic.

Almost every knowledgeable expert/analyst/fan has Magic ahead of Kobe as a Laker and in the all-time rankings.

Magic is generally regarded as a top 5 player of all-time while Kobe is most often regarded as a top 8-12 player of all-time depending on the rankings.

Kobe is 2 behind Jordan ...Lebron's PR machine has manufactured the narrative that he's number 2 when in all reality he should be no higher than 8 all time ..and in my opinion he's closer to 12.

Depends what the word greatest means to you and the people you're pushing back on. When I think GOAT of a franchise, I don't think "the best player to put on that uniform" as the only qualifier. In my definition, cultural significance absolutely plays a part. Kyle Lowry is pretty unanimously the greatest Raptor of all time in Toronto. No one pretends he's the best player to ever put on a Raptors uniform.

I've rarely heard a non-Lakers fan who knows the game say Kobe is the greatest Laker of all time. Only Lakers fans. And for those folks, the definition is probably different than what you are envisioning.

But he is going to be ranked higher than other players who didn’t play their whole career in LA.

Because he is. 5 titles, 2 dynasties, 20 years, Magic was Hollywood, but Kobe brought grit to Hollywood. LA might be Hollywood, but LA is also endless traffic and the grind to make ends meet. Kobe was LA and he was LA's warts and all.

I mean Kobe is in the conversation, and old internet is dominated by millenials I imagine, who would favor Kobe. But Lakers have insane list of legends and most people know it. Kobe is idol to many current players and fans for good reason, but he also has that very loud delusional cult of fans who really loudly believe he is some kind of GOAT and are living just different reality all together.. I think you just need to tune off that cult in particular, and you get the clearer picture, for me it is not really hard to ignore that loud, but frankly not that large part of fandom, who are just not reasonable about anything. People often call Kobe overrated, because they fall for his cult, but in general, I do not believe Kobe is overrated.

I compare Kobe’s stature and fandom to Derek Jeter’s. Now unlike Kobe, Jeter was never the best at his position while playing and was never a top 5 or top 10 player in the league. Hell the best Yankee of the past 30 years(until Judge recently) is clearly Rivera. But if you ask any Yankee fans under 40 and maybe 50 who the most popular Yankee is it’s probably unanimously Jeter. Like Kobe was the king of LA for a period of time, Jeter was basically the king of NY for even longer so it wouldn’t surprise me if some younger fans have him ranked ridiculously high in Yankees lore.

But even then unlike casual basketball fans, casual baseball fans aren’t that stupid because I doubt even a young Yankee fan would say Jeter is the greatest Yankee of all time and nor would he even crack the top 10 or even 15 because of the Yankees history. Which is why again I get frustrated with young basketball fans because the Lakers have the storied history of a team like the Yankees so for some Laker fans to act like it’s a clear cut case that Kobe is no lower than #2 kind of shows a lack of respect for history.
