Hornets/Nets
Nets out: Cam Thomas
Hornets out: nets choice of Tree Mann, Salaun, or Dinwiddie, 2026 first round pick that is the worst of 3 teams
Why for the Nets: They get a pick, they can take a flier on another player or save money with the lower cost expiring of Dinwiddie. They only really give up the services of Cam Thomas for this season which was going to be awkard anyway and his bird rights. If they wanted to they could still try to resign him next offseason with capspace plus be ahead the pick.
Why for Hornets: they are trying to make the playoffs next year and the scoring punch of Cam Thomas on a one year 6 mil deal is good value. If the Hornets wanted to they could try to resign him next offseason with capspace even though they don't get bird rights in the trade.
Why for Cam Thomas, because he has to approve the trade also: There is nothing left to prove by being a volume scorer on a losing team. He needs to show that he can fit in with other talented players and elevate a team in order to increase his value. Hornets have a lot of good pieces but expectations are still very low league wide. He also puts himself in a position where a team has traded a 1st for him and will not want to lose that value for nothing. Losing his bird rights doesn't matter a lot because the nets look like they are going to have cap space anyway.

Re: Hornets/Nets
Why not just get Simons for expirings instead of paying a 1st for Thomas?

Re: Hornets/Nets
Assuming Mann's back is okay, I think I'd rather have him at $7M per than Cam Thomas at the dollar amount he wants.
Mann is a "to be determined" though, he was playing great prior to injury but the sample size was tiny.

Re: Hornets/Nets
also Cam Thomas loses bird rights if he is traded, so we'd have to utilize cap space to re-sign him if we wanted to. Cam is not going to have any real trade value.

Re: Hornets/Nets
I assume CHA is one of the team projected to have cap next summer?
If so, Thomas might accept a deal there. But with no Bird rights, there's no need for a pick of any kind. Just make it Connaughton for Cam straight up. Pat expires too so doesn't mess up cap room.

Simons makes a lot more money and that salary would have to be matched.

I would do that but I don't see why the Nets would.
We also need to cut 3 guys already just to get to 15 so that is likely Connaughton, Nick Smith Jr and DaQuan Jefferies. That means if we want to add Cam we need to also get rid of someone else just to get to 15 roster spots. Options would be Josh Green, Tre Mann (who we just signed this offseason), Dinwiddie (who we just signed this offseason to one year deal), and Salaun.

PatC/Salaun/NSJ is most if not all the way there

Re: Hornets/Nets
Celtics get Josh Green
Nets gets Pat Connaughton and BOS 2nd
Hornets get Anfernee Simons
Celtics out of tax, Nets get paid for cap room, Hornets improve and shave off one of their extra guaranteed contracts.
Maybe somehow Cam to BOS is added to this as well? Just a thought.

Re: Hornets/Nets
I guess that would be alright. Still probably rather have Cam Thomas because he is a little younger and might still have more upside. I also like that Thomas gets to the ft line more often.

i like this a lot. getting out of the final year of Green's deal is worth it. doubt Boston would do this as-is, but if I had to, I'd have Charlotte sending 2nd instead of Boston

Boston getting out of the tax and resetting the repeater clock in a gap year would be massive for them. Next year Green is expiring and they can use him to match salary in a deal. However, I'm also sure they will take you up on paying the freight to BKN.

Hornets owe multiple 2nds in a green/patC for simons swap imo (they are getting out of 10M guaranteed money between this and next year)

Re: Hornets/Nets
I'd say there are 2 things wrong with the general idea.
First, Charlotte already added limited/no defense combo guards already. Sexton most notably and I believe another option or two as well (Dinwiddle?).
Second, Charlotte is starting Plumlee at center. They aren't trying for the playoffs.
