Kyle said it is a long shot Brock plays Sunday and it is probably a multiple week injury. Not great..

FML. Cursed season. The only silver lining is that Mac is at least a decent QB - though I question his ability to play under pressure. Our schedule should be very easy down the stretch, with only the division games and maybe Indy looking particularly tough (jury still out on Chicago, too). In terms of the early schedule, we beat the Hawks (thank God), should be able to beat the Saints without Brock, should be able to at least give Jacksonville a run for it, and same for Arizona. If we can go 3-1 to start the season, we should be in fine shape. Even 2-2 or 1-3 isn't devastating. Though I think we need Brock back for the Rams. Regardless, we can't keep losing vital players at this rate.

Aside from losing, it’s hard to think of a more costly opening. Watching the film, I found myself hoping Trent is injured or out of shape. Because if this is the new normal, we’re in big trouble. Puni looked terrible, too.

Very late edit: I should add that I think I liked Saleh’s game calls. I’m only a bit hesitant because I really don’t know what to think of the Seahawks’ offence, so it’s a bit hard to gauge. But assuming they aren’t terrible, I liked Salah’s aggression and multiple looks, and his in-game adjustments.

Hold him out until the Rams game. The good news is we will have Purdy, Kittle, Robinson, and maybe BA coming back healthy when the schedule gets more difficult

Yeah, and the next time a Niners injury projection during the season is too pessimistic will be the first I can remember offhand. I’d say ‘set it at 5 weeks as the minimum’ with fairly complete confidence excepting Brock seems like the kind of guy to push it, and Kyle seems more willing to risk QB health than other positions. Couple that with how desperate things will be in 3-4 weeks and this might be the exception. If it was the off-season I’d trust their projections more, they seem to blow less sunshine up asses then.

So, for the next few weeks minimum it’ll be Mac Jones throwing to Pearsall and…Bourne?…and Tongues? (Until some of them go down…apologies, but we all know it’s probable.) Behind an incredibly suspect OL, and supported by a scrap heap kicker. Yikes. The D looks better, at least against Seattle, but not that much better. This week might actually be our best shot at scraping out a win against the hapless Saints, at least we should be decent on one side of the ball, they might be the worst team in the league…though at current strength we might be in that conversation, I think we might see one of those situations where the D regularly competes with the O for which one scores more. Another bad aspect is I’d imagine we’re gonna run CMC into the ground now, unless they kinda wave the white flag, which doesn’t seem to be in Kyle’s DNA.

Serious question, if this year goes as pear shaped as it appears, whose job is in jeopardy? Lynch? Kyle? Both? Neither?

Lone bright spot: team desperately needs a major infusion of young top end talent and a lost weekend season might actually be our best case scenario from the long-term perspective. Maybe high enough to draft a Trent successor, maybe a Proctor, Fano or Chaplin (just going off mocks, I’ve done zero film on any draft prospects) in the first, an WR in the 2nd, etc. Or maybe they decide Brock’s build is gonna mean injuries are a regular thing and Big J dances a jig as we draft a Sellers or Nussmeier.

Of course that’s a year of CMC, Bosa, Fred wasted and maybe Trent retires, etc.

The good news is that the schedule doesn't really get difficult. Toughest stretch by far is weeks 5-10 when we play the Rams twice, Bucs, and Texans. But the Texans may be bad (no run game, no OL), and we also get Atlanta (possibly decent?) and Giants (not) in that stretch.

As suggested above, the bigger issues is that our HC seems determined to expose our $55 million QB to significant risk.

Started to include this in the post above, but wanted to make it it's own post.

I don't like the $55 million number (actually $53M/year on the extension) that gets reported for Purdy. The contract was an extension on his current deal, which was peanuts, so the actual number is more like $45 million a year. Pundits have pointed to Brock at $53 million and Darnold at $33.5 million on his three-year deal, for instance, and say they'd rather have Darnold for $20M less a year, but that doesn't reflect the reality of the contracts. Darnold's cap hit is larger than Purdy's every season of that deal (by about $4 million this year, $9 million next year, and $11 million in year three). If Darnold plays well, he'll get a bigger contract after or during that contract, and inevitably cost much more than Purdy. Granted because of the length it's a lot easier to get out of it he doesn't pan out.

Same deal with Baker Mayfield, whose deal is reported as $33.3M a year, but whose cap hits are $2M less than Purdy this year, but $2M more next year, $20M more in year three, and about $22M in dead money after that.

Josh Allen's contract is often cited at $55 million - correctly - but that also doesn't truly compare to Purdy's (and no, I am not comparing Allen and Purdy as players). Allen's contract is six years for $330M ($55M/year) while Purdy's is reported as five years for $265M ($53M/year). But again, that doesn't count this year for Purdy, when he's making very little money - though somewhat more because of the extension. In reality, Allen has substantially higher numbers against the cap throughout the life of his contract.

This year, Allen's cap hit is about $27M higher than Purdy's, next year it's about $31M more, year three it's $22M more, year four it's close with Allen $2M more, year five $14M more, and in year six $15M more. If both players play out their contracts - admittedly unlikely - Allen's cap hits will account for over well over $100M more in cap hits than Purdy, but they are reported as only differing by $2M/year.

Even if we crush next year's draft, I can't see us being in better shape with Trent, CMC, Kittle, Warner, and Bosa a year older. We have some promising young players, but those vets are all going to be in the HOF conversation (with CMC probably the weakest resume at present, somewhat shockingly). I don't see guys in the pipeline who are likely to replace them.

To be fair, although Shanahan may bear some responsibility for the injuries since he's ultimately in charge of everything, it's hard to really pin that on him. And on offense, we were missing Aiyuk, Robinson (hold him more responsible for those two as we knew going into the season that neither would be available early), Cowing, Watkins, Kittle for most of the game, and Jennings for much of the game.

We had two legitimate receiving threats against a good defense, really good DL, and in a very hostile environment where it's hard to play. I think the offense Kyle and John put together is better than how it looked on Sunday, largely as a result of things that are out of - or at the very least quite hard for them - to control.
