Adam Silver: "This is very much a highlight based sport"

Post#1 » by dygaction » Wed Sep 10, 2025 10:59 pm

The NBA commissioner tells people: "there is a huge amount of our content people can essentially consume for free - this is very much a highlight based sport". Does he think that full games are for people with large appetite who need to consume much more?

Adam Silver just sucks as commissioner. Please retire with your millions of dollars and enjoy your life, far away from this beloved NBA league while there is still something in it to love.

If he does retire, I hope the new commissioner will remove the cup tournament

Just take a page from Silver's book: don't bother watching it, simply watch highlights.

Silver's vision for the future of the NBA is a fan watching highlights and betting everything on sports gambling.
Who needs fans who want to watch a full game.

Great.

Might have to cancel league pass, stop watching games, and start watching highlights.

What a joke of a commissioner.

F1's CEO Stephano Domenicali suggested the same thing earlier this month -- as a lot of highlights get massive #'s on YT, but the races probably show otherwise. He said in essence that the audience prefers shorter-form content. Well, not really, we just don't have access for every race because of time or station etc.

Silver's comments echo that as data suggests from their online presence -- audience on legal streaming services, Over-the-Air (OTA), subscription-based, etc - that gives them one level to track. harder to gauge - illegal streaming sites and how many use each game, but it is significant.

YT posts highlight compilations, IG and X have plays as well clipped for everyone to see + a worldwide audience clicks in, even I watch highlights after a game because I like to see the plays in condensed form at times. So, they get random audience who do not have access, or miss it due to time difference, and they get repeat viewers to their free posts.

The line is not hard to follow, they generate a lot of audience from highlights. However, the statement is counter to the sport's importance for live audience (in person or via broadcast partners). "where Amazing happens" was a recent NBA season tagline, and that's something they really need to consider when making statements of this nature. I just don't know what else to say, Silver makes weird comments. Highlights are great, but the league is certainly not only that.
Cheers

I think this actually gets to the heart of the problem with the modern NBA leadership.

We're basically talking about a bunch of careerist lawyers who just happened to end up in charge of a basketball league, and it shows.

Is there a sport that isn’t “highlight based”?

Why watch:
90 minutes of soccer?
60 minutes of football?
9 innings of baseball?

Heck; why watch people play pool/snooker? My god, that was such dumb statement.

He's right, you know.

He was just being honest to how most fans watch the game.

Not me, and a lot of people, especially the ones who are on this forum, agree or see the game that way, since we enjoy the sport a lot. When it comes to the casual fans, it actually is how they consume it. Adam Silver's talking economics.

He gets it. I watch hours of Redzone every Sunday which is essentially NFL highlights.

This is something NBACentel would come up with. Would never expect from the main guy himself. Idiotic comment.

I actually hope he goes easy on the clippers so the owners get mad and consider a replacement.
