So in the end Finland lost twice to to-be European champions, and only other losses in the tournemant were against Lithuania and Greece, games they could have won if a play or two would have gone their way. They were that good this year.

For the next Eurobasket France needs come with their A-team, no more excuses. They have the talent to rule European basketball, they just need everybody to suit up.

And Finland beat Serbia with a half injured Markkanen. Now everyone knows the team isn't all about Lauri, but of course Lauri is easily the biggest star of the Finnish national team.

Germans don'T care about Basketball at all.
If it was Turkey, Greece winning. The celebrations would be ongoing for at least three days and nights.
It is football, you call it soccer, they care about and anything else is fr us enthusiasts.
As someone with turkish roots living in Germany and born and raised here, it was bitter sweet.
I am happy for the Germans, they are worthy champs. Turkey need one more key player and they will be up there again.
Alperen is on his way to the top 20 in the NBA mayber cracking the top 15 if he gels with Durant.
Will be an amazing team to watch

Like Schnakenpopanz said, no one cares about basketball in Germany. Just for reference, I played against 4 members of the team in minor leagues. That's just how small the basketball community is.

And if we included those that weren't on the team but probably should have been if not for injuries (Kleber, Hartenstein), that number would move up to 6.

I'm still happy that we understand how to develop players. Basketball has kind of become "the most German thing", because of how this system is just automated since 2012 and now we just live with the results and no one has changed anything ever since.
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.

Kinda sad... something that would have been declared a holiday for some countries is just meh for GER.

Is one of the reasons like they dont get paid as much as soccer/football players? I mean Franz has a max contract. Is 270m usd not impressive conpared tonother sports there?

Franz is the german athlete who makes the most money per year currently, soccer is just so engrained in germany, that's all.

You would think that seeing your countryman earning 270m in 5 years a lot of athletes or fans would splinter to that sport.

I don't think anybody cares much about contracts. It's just that no sports has a chance compared to soccer.

I don't want to sound too harsh on my compatriots, but Germans are not fans of sports, they are fans of winning. If Boris Becker and Steffi Graf are at the top of the world, every German is tennis "fan", if Jan Ullrich wins the Tour de France, every German is cycling "fan". Now some people even watch basketball finals. Even my parents watched the game and they don't know anything about basketball. But when the success is gone, nobody cares about those sports anymore, other than a small but very loyal group of fans. Like, German basketball fans are great and loyal, there just aren't many.

Like, Belgians and the French love cycling, whether they win or not. Germans only "love" cycling for three weeks of the year when one of them has a chance to win the Tour de France.

I guess Franz could make a billion dollars and football would still be king in Germany and close to no-one would care about basketball.

Basketball in Europe will be a big thing only if the big markets(Britain, Germany, France) embrace it.
That won't happen.
You can't force someone to love a sport.
At this point it is what it is.

Yeah, I mean, Germany had one of the ten best basketball players in the World for around a decade. Literally an all-time great. And when I told friends or colleagues that Dirk is on one level with Boris Becker, Steffi Graf, Franz Beckenbauer or Michael Schumacher, they looked at me like I was a lunatic. They had no idea was he was doing on the other side of the big pond.

You would think that seeing your countryman earning 270m in 5 years a lot of athletes or fans would splinter to that sport.

Remember that Franz Wagner gets paid by the Magic who have so much money to spend due to broadcasting rights which are mainly paid by US customers (and then by many more viewers all over the world with only a fraction of them Germans).
It was a sidenote in German sports magazines that Wagner is the highest paid German athlete now. That doesn't mean that the average sports fan gets drawn away from association football to basketball as it's about the sport itself and not about the income of the athletes.

With sportswashing going on a German golf player could theoretically earn more than Wagner on that articifial Saudi golf tour, and still noone would care about watching golf as it will still remain a fringe sport in comparison to football.

In Germany football ranks above everything else, with even the 2nd Bundesliga drawing a lot more fans than other sports. In winter nordic and alpine skiing is shown a lot (mostly due to the winter break of the Bundesliga and European football cups), motor sports (F1) is popular, and some track and field. Other sports only will be watched by a lot of people when it's a major tournament like now with the EuroBasket 2025. It's the same with ice hockey (Leon Draisaitl became the first German MVP in the NHL, and still noone cares about that league. Germans will watch an ice hockey world cup and some Olympic games, but that's it) which is much less popular than handball which might be the 2nd most popular team sports in Germany.
Don't underestimate the time difference. Sports is best watched (and discussed) with pals, but very few people can actually afford to watch games in the middle of the night. So American leagues aren't really watched that much.

I guess that Wagner could stroll through German streets and most people would be in awe because of his height, but they would not recognize him. Schröder might be a bit more recognizable as the star of the current national team, but up to this point Nowitzki remains the only German basketball player to really transcend beyond the sport in Germany. And even he is way less popular than the biggest association football stars or the most successful athletes of the pre-internet era when audiences weren't that fractured as they are now. As -Luke- said: Beckenbauer had always been present as an active player, then coach and pundit. In the 80s everyone was watching Becker and Graf, in the 90s Michael Schumacher dominated with millions watching, but with so many others means of watching entertainment now football is the only true mass event left that is watched by millions at the same time.

Errrr his height? 6'6 and above arent normal in Germany? Still... i guess its different with everyone. You would think the highest paid athelte of a country, being paid higher than footballers, would be publicize more. Guess its a culture thing.

6'10 is really rare everywhere in the world. How many people of that height do you actually know?

Yes, American culture. Let's talk about that again when Wagner gets paid by Germans... Would you start to watch Bollywood films because a compatriot of yours gets paid more in India than Hollywood actors?

It's also about context.. In Eurobasket you can't go 1:1 comparisons with how NBA teams function. There are nations that have absolute **** players and still can match up with top teams because of their star players and due to other various factors.

Also, what participation trophies you talking about? :o

I have read that those nordic or whatever region guys like " the mountain" came from, 6'10 are not a big deal. If 6'6 is normal... 6'10 might be no biggie as well. Compared to say thoe SEA countries where being a 6footer gets you stared at.

Ah yeah...see your point. Since its not German companies giving that amount...

That would be Iceland. Where the average height of a male is the same as in Germany (a tad below 6 feet). 8-10 inches more are a lot. That's a full head. I mean a guy being 8-10 inches shorter than the average would also be noticeable, right? In the US, that would be a guy less than 5 feet tall...

Maybe I exaggerated a bit when I said "in awe". But Wagner would literally stand out due to his height, and that's what could make people think about him being a basketball player. Other than that I doubt that he is so popular in Germany right now that many would recognize him by his sheer looks.
