Rough to trade a former near-lottery pick for cash.

. . . and some former lottery picks aren't worth their salary, or even a roster spot. Saw this with Killian Hayes on DET too . . .

I generally applaud GMs who recognise a mistake -- even when they are recognising someone else's mistake -- and cut their losses

Bufken (15) and JHS (16) are alreay given up on, I don't think Hawkins (14) is tearing it up either, unless when he plays the Mavs...

Unfortunately he has been unable to stay healthy. Hawks had to make a decision on his $6.9 million QO before the season starts. I thought his SL performance was a determining factor.

That’s a club option for his 4th year. The QO decision comes after the player finishes their contract.

yeah and it's pretty likely they weren't willing to accept it, with Trae, Daniels, Kennard, and NAW playing in front of him for the foreseeable future

Yeah once you get past the top 5 this draft starts to look pretty rough. Four guys in the first round (Bufkin, JHS, Whitmore, OMP) already off the teams that drafted them. Arguably the best guy drafted outside the top 5 was Camara, who went 52nd overall.

From the 2022 draft, 11 first-round players have already changed teams: Johnny Davies, Agbaji, AJ Griffin, LaRavia, Malaki Branham, Roddy, Beuchamp, Blake Wesley, Wendell Moore Jr, Patrick Baldwin Jr and TyTy Washington.

Crazy. Brogdon, Shamet, and Garrison Matthews all taking non guaranteed vet minimums to compete for the same roster spot (due to hard cap space, and unless NY salary dumps Dadiet into space to clear a second spot)? Not something I would have predicted a year or two ago.

...am I crazy to think that I'd rather have Shamet & Brogdon than Clarkson?

Don't know. You'll likely have all 3 when Kolek or Dadiet are traded into an exception/space?

Just goes to show that amassing first round picks is a great rebuilding strategy in theory but less so when those picks frequently don't even end up as playable rotation guys. The quality of the picks matters, a lot.

Agbaji was the only one where the guy was traded because the other team wanted the actual player vs the salary slot.

Tyty and Wendell were part of salary dump trades in the first two years of their rookie contracts

Tyty was on a two way contract at the start of his second season

I’m oddly fascinated with the oddness of this part of that draft

And given the way he's shot in recent years, will Clarkson even play over Kolek by season's end?

I'm a little surprised Dadiet is still on our books. He's an interesting prospect, but he's nowhere near contributing for a contender. I just assumed we'd move him and bring McCullar back on a two-way deal to groom as future wing depth.

Kolek feels different because I'm not sure he's a worse defender than Clarkson / Brogdon, and he showed he can run an NBA offense if his shot ever starts to drop consistently at this level.

Just a random bad one? throwing Dallas in a deal they don’t belong? A simple reasonable deal ruined?

Vassell to Dallas
Klay and MPJ to SAS
Keldon, Barnes, Saric, Powell to Brooklyn
Naji to Sac

With Sac giving 1-2 seconds to SAS or Brooklyn or Dallas?

SAS - gets good spacing and keeps the books set for clear for the year before Wemby.

SAC - gets a forward. Dumps the 1-2 million dollars to get back under the tax later. Could be Carter for a vet min or something bigger and more exciting.

Brooklyn - buys out some more guys, but clears 20 million for next season when they need to build a roster.

Dallas - hopes Vassell can bounce back but they get a younger and better starter by taking on money and losing Naji?

I think SAS would just do the MPJ part and bet on vassell bouncing back.
