Something not completely out of the questiong is Houston swinging a trade at the deadline. Outside of this season (1-4 protected), Houston owns all of their own First Round Draft Picks, alongside a couple of interesting ones from other teams (2027 FRP swap with Brooklyn, 2027 Phoenix FRP, and two best of DAL/HOU/PHX in 2029). They are pretty loaded with Draft capital, so finding a stop-gap or bringing in a big target isn't infeasible.

They probably won't be able to until partway through the season. We'll see what Sheppard can do, I assume they will have an injury exception to sign a point guard on the market. Maybe Brogdon asked to be released and signs with them? They could trade their 2028 1st + DFS for a point guard, later. They have so many valuable picks, that seems to be the least valuable over the next 3 years. Dosunmu would be a nice target.

I thought they really needed another guard already - I would have added Ty Jerome rather than DFS as they already were deep at forward.

There's a bunch of teams that have extra guards and are thin at forward, but it's tough to make a deal right now. DFS was just signed, Smith just got an extension and Eason is the guy they care about most long-term.

Rough for Houston though.

Honestly it means bigger roles for Thompson and Shepherd, so while it does suck it will help their young players develop.

they are super tight against 1st apron. Even if they get a DPE they cant use it on a FA (Without sending out someone else)

Blazers would likely be wiling to send Holiday out.

Matching contracts would be difficult though... Not sure how to make that work - while keeping value reasonable.

After Dec 15th:
Holiday ($32M)
for
FVV ($25M) + ???

I love that idea, especially since Holiday didn't seem too excited to be in Portland after the deal.

FVV + 2028 HOU 1st?

Next season Portland can flip FVV?

Scoot would get a lot of mentorship. Partial season with Holiday, partial season with FVV, two seasons with Lillard. If he can't succeed after having so many examples of successful players there is nothing more Portland can do.

FVV has an implicit no trade clause, due to the player option on the 2nd year. Can’t imagine he lets that go through?

According to Spotrac, they’re only $1.2m to the hard cap at the apron and with only 14 guys, with everyone fully guaranteed.

And, right now, only KD, Sengun, Reed, Amen, and Eason are even eligible to be traded right now. It’s not easy to clear a vet minimum worth. Not with what Houston should be willing to move, that is.

I thought Adams is tradable too

Could be. There was some question over the summer if he ever actually signed the extension, or if it was merely a new contract. He could be tradeable if it was an extension signed in June.

Should be, rather. Houston announced it officially in June, so yeah, he'd be trade eligible too. Spotrac had him listed as trade restricted.

I'm not making any panic trades if I'm Houston. Just go on with business as usual in regards to the last two contract extensions on the checklist. I'd give the team 20 games to establish themselves and reevaluate from there. I'd put out feelers to see whether CJ McCollum has put any thought into requesting a buyout from Washington. He seems like a really good fit, and at this stage of his career it's probably good to go somewhere that takes care of their vets and has aspirations to win games.

Dumping Holiday and Okogie would get the Rockets a bit over $5M under the first apron

Jeff Green or Tate, they have enough forwards.

For both of these, the main problem is those guys all can't be traded until 12/15, so the team has to go almost 2 months of games without a veteran PG to hold the fort down. If Houston is willing to wait, these guys are all preferable to Adams or Eason.

Would FVV agree to that deal? He has an implicit no trade clause this year.

Yeah, they'll go ~20 games w/o FVV, and wait for a buyout for CJ or sign Brogdon, trial by fire for Sheppard and Amen as lead PGs.
