i know they mostly shut this idea down during training camp, but i wonder if they experiment with wright at LT/trapilo at RT during the bye
The penalty are killers, but the biggest problem is moreso with roster construction. If you have someone who is adequate who can take that spot, and Darnell is going to be due for a contract, I think you need to look at trading the asset. My same thoughts are with a guy like Cole Kmet. Your ROI on keeping Wright while having Trapilo on the roster is 0 for Trapilo since he can't play the left side, but looks competent so far on the right.
You need competent back ups though. And Trapillo was brought in, IMO, as a possible replacement for Braxton. It may take him a year or two to get more comfortable on the left side, or they might shift Darnell over. In any case, both are likely viewed as long term pieces. Although of course Darnell might price himself out of the Bears plans if he asks for too much.
I think the latter is the case. The Bears cap is a mess due to Poles overpaying quite a few players, especially on the defensive side of the ball. They have a top 5 payroll on that side, and they can't stop the run to save their lives. Only way the Bears can make it work is if Darnell takes a discount (especially if they want him to move to the left side) and there are cap casualties such as Cole Kmet, Jaylon Johnson, etc. They probably will have to restructure a few deals as well.
I would prefer to keep Darnell, but I think if you have Trapillo and you see Theo as your swing guy, then he's expendable considering you need a RB, you need two edge guys and maybe a LB in there.
