Both AK & Billy's big focus next season is:
- Defense
- 29th in forcing TOs
- 29th or 28th in offensive boards
- 29th in drawing charges
- Poor on loose balls
- Can't handle physicality (play-in game vs Miami mentioned many times)

Basically all hustle/energy plays.
When it comes to the first tip-off, I bet all that gets thrown out the window and we see Vuc & Williams starting again as always.

From their words you would think the starting lineup would be: Giddey, White, Okoro, Buzelis, Collins. But I doubt it will be that.

I tend to agree.

I feel like the defense won't change while Vuc is starting. I also feel like the defensive effort thing is just a way of punting the issue that they didn't fix the C position back on the players.

i do think vucevic as a bench guy would be good for all parties involved. let him feast against backups and anchor a reserve lineup that's not going to have a ton in the way of guys who can create their own shot. that's probably the role he'd play on any team that's trading for him anyway, so it's not like you're killing his (nonexistent) trade value in the process

But in reality though, unless we change the fundamental idea for the team, nothing will ever change on that end. One guy doing it makes no difference.

Think of it this way, we had the best deflection guy in the league in Caruso and we still sucked on defense. We had the best offensive rebounder in the league in Drum and had the same sucky defense and rebounding.

What I mean is, its not on one guy to make this change. It has to be the team - commitment from everyone.

Okoro is exactly like having Lonzo. So nothing will change on the surface. Unless its commitment to playing tough defense, offensive rebounding, playing physical etc, nothing will actually change.

The strategy of "just try harder" feels like an awful strategy unless you feel like your head coach was an utter failure and your players were not motivated or trying hard last year.

Coaching up to try and dive on the floor and draw charges feels like a particularly poor plan in that you are physically punishing yourself considerably and increasing wear and tear and injury for plays that have a relatively low chance of generating meaningful differences as well.

But it's also all meaningless fluff. They also said we're going to protect the rim, play zone, and threw out every basic defensive buzz word you could think of. None of the things they described actually match our personnel.

Well, Okoro would be different than having Lonzo if he's actually available to play. The Bulls didn't meaningfully have Lonzo Ball on the team last year.

Most excited I've been for the start of a season since 2021 all mostly due to watching Matas/Essengue run with Giddey. Starting P-Will will make sure we don't get off to a hot start and hurt our draft pick. Matas developing and being bad enough so ownership has no choice but to finally fire AKME is all that matters for the 2025 campaign.

By far the biggest realistic opportunities for improved defense are reducing the minutes of Vuc and Huerter. Vuc because he's terrible and Huerter because he's just not nearly as good as Patrick, Ayo or Okoro on D. Everyone else is either not a liability on D or has a role that won't and shouldn't change like Coby and Josh.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

I guess if the rook is a three level defender and Buzelis takes another step and Vuc plays less we'll improve on defense but almost certainly we'll be a bad defensive team again, because three guys that will get a ton of minutes: white, vuc, giddey -- all are below average to downright awful at their position.

Best hope is the Bulls can get to a point where they're more of a bend, but don't break defense, which is doable with the current personnel. Right now, they're just break.

The Bulls are silly. They decide to load it today. They seem to believe people who care cannot watch it elsewhere.

More like broken.

Tre, Ayo, Okoro and Noa should all help on D, energy and deflections.

Billy says he thinks Ayo can be an elite defender.

Me too. Now go and do it Ayo.
