Rather have him than Kuminga but a touch high. Maybe the RFA game would have been better, but if they see him in a bigger role this year than not a bad gamble to go ahead and lock him in.

Pretty smart for a guy who's always hurt to lock up the money.

Wow the Heat can’t help themselves locking up role players to expensive long term contracts.

Trying to compete with the Bulls for the ultimate play-in franchise?

Jovic has some potential but 62.4M seems a bit rich. Good for him for getting the bag.

Good for Jovic, but totally unnecessary for Heat...

Ridiculous contract for Miami. Their cap management has been atrocious for a while now.

Great deal, this is a value contract in the long run, not sure how this can be interpreted as bad, when it's 8-9% of the cap for a 22y old with two way impact potential

This is the MLE next offseason right?

I would take this shot if I were Miami and deal with the overpaid 3rd forward if Jovic is done developing? I just don’t think he is.

I think that’s Jovic’s established floor? A not great third forward, so overpaid by a few mil a year? But the upside is he keeps developing his ball handling .. puts on enough weight to not get bullied in paint on defense..

While he is already great enough from the corner that Spo should be throwing the ball that way anytime defenses want to cave on Bam..

I’d like this a lot more with a team option, but I understand it for Miami. If Jovic has developed on either side, there’s tanking teams giving him 20 mill or more a year next offseason.

Yeah I tend to agree.
He is a good young guy with upside.
This probably starts at 14m per year or so. Not that horrible.

I'd say a good comp.is Jake Laravia who signed for 12/2.
The market really stopped handing full MLE for fringe starter players, both in AAV and length.
Maybe the Heat see something else internally but judging by what he accomplished and comapring to reference, it's a pricy deal.

Who else from 2022 draft class already got an extension? Only Banchero, Chet. Jabari and JDub?

First two years are sub-MLE money. That makes him very useful in trades because they will be able to send him to a 3rd team for the MLE exception if salary savings are needed as a component of a larger trade.

A little less than the MLE over the next 4 years.

It's basically the same deal as what Obi Toppin got? And...that seems about right? Neither is really a long-term answer at starting forward, but really useful as a 3rd forward/3rd big? Can definitely argue Jovic is a better player than Obi, but probably pretty similar level impact on the court as a player?

I get it on MIA's side. This level of contract is small enough that it's really hard for it ever to be truly "bad money" even if the guy is overpaid by X million or whatever. And I definitely see reason for optimism that he can smooth out the wrinkles in his game and be worth this or even more.

Definitely can argue they should have just played the year out. But I think the boom or bust scenario is unlikely - he seems unlikely to break out into some mega star where this is a steal and he also seems unlikely to totally flame out to being a minimum type player where this is an albatross even at low-ish money. The reasonable range probably is that he's decent and they could get him like taxpayers MLE money vs. full MLE or that he plays well and maybe commands a bit more than the MLE next year which is a few million more than this.

Considering their long term cap sheet and outlook, I think it makes sense to lock this deal in now vs. try to nickel and dime and maybe save some money next year.

Heat were a model organization for a long time.

And to be fair they are still pretty good at developing role players. But then they overpay to keep them.

I dont think this is an overpay. Jovic has flashed some nice skills.

If he can scale up his 24/25 production to 30mpg he is about a 13ppg / 5rpg / 3.5apg / 2 3PT made level guy w/ 56% eFG. He has already passed that .100 WS48 mark that is a decent barometer for a legit rotation player. Worst case IMO he is a great 3rd big at a slightly high AV deal but he for sure has 4th starter upside.

Hard to get too worked up about a young guy who's shown flashes getting a less than MLE contract. It's a slight overpay if he doesn't improve at all, but could potentially be a pretty significant underpay. Either way, he won't be a drag on their cap space.

Maybe they should have pushed for a team option on the last year but that's a minor quibble.

Agree. Only difference I’d mention is Jovic is 23 the first year of extension and Toppin was 26.

I’d actually rather have Toppin than Jovic last season (don’t blame others for picking Jovic), but I think Miami built in some upside there that Indy didn’t have to build in?
