Contend for home court? Maybe.
Contend for a title? Nonsense.

I don't view that as screwing over your players.

There is a real opportunity cost to overpaying your players, more than just cash spent.

Players don't give you back cap space when they suck, players don't give you back apron room or lux tax savings if they end up injured. This all needs to be factored in.

If he outplays his contract, he will be rewarded in unrestricted free agency down the line.

His life isn't ruined, he will still make life changing money, even if he gets completely "screwed". We are talking about 1 yacht vs 3 yachts here.

That is what is great about the NBA (and its CBA), everything about it is a series of gamesmanship, from the product on the court, to free agency, to trades. This is what makes the NBA better to me that the other sports.

2007 was a great year. Loved knocking the We Believe Dubs out of the playoffs with the Gentleman's Sweep.

Offensive foul, he raked AK47 across the face.

1.) Not extend
2.) Not make an offer
3.) Let a RFA go to market, in which the player is unlikely to receive a deal outside of MLE.

Due to the moratorium, any potential bidder would have to completely sit out bidding on UFAs, to make the offer sheet to the RFA. The team with matching rights, will then wait the entire three days to match, to punish teams for doing this. There simply is very little incentive for opposing teams to pursue restricted free agents.

Since the Jazz, have the low cap hold, and bird rights, they can and should do exactly what the Jazz are doing to ensure the lowest possible contract.

With the new CBA, the incentive to not overpay is greater than ever. There should be a bit of reckoning when it comes to these non true max players.

I don't blame Kessler for being disappointed, but for multiple reasons I think this was absolutely the right call for the Jazz. Time will tell if that turns out to be true.

Kessler could also have a great year and raise his value even more, so it is an opportunity to for him.

some players seem to pick and choose when they know it's a business

eh, utah has no credible PG and their coach/FO will actively sabotage the team to lose... it will be really hard to have a great year

How long has it been since we’ve done the Kuz+vet min for Grant?

How long since the Kuz to Sac, DDR to Portland, Grant to Mil.. with vet mins as needed and Portland paying a few seconds? Clearing Grant’s third year seems worth paying something for..

How do you watch the Kuminga situation and go "yes, we must copy this exactly except while tanking."

The Jazz threw away all of the excess value of Walker Kessler's rookie contract for like... Literally nothing I guess?

Sounds good till the non max player demands a trade.

Boring part of offseason so time for a terrible idea:

Sacramento trade: DDR, Monk, 2026 1st, 2028 top 4 protected 1st, worse of 2030 MINN/SAS 1st
Sacramento receive: Barnes

Toronto trade: Barnes, Barrett
Toronto receive: Markkanen, Monk, 2nd worse of 2027 LAL/CLE/MINN 1st

Utah trade: Markkanen, 2nd worse of 2027 LAL/CLE/MINN 1st
Utah receive: Barrett, DDR, SAC 2026 1st, SAC 2028 top 4 protected 1st, worse of MINN/SAS 2030 1st

I think you can also spin off Barrett for Kuzma/Smith/Cash from Milwaukee and DDR for Rozier/2nd(s) from Miami to milk a little more value for Utah

Why for Sacramento: Hope Barnes do for them what Gordon did for Denver.
Why for Toronto: get a more expensive but better offensive fit next to Ingram (and eventually CMB down the road). Replace RJ with Monk who is content in a 6th man role. Save enough money to dodge the tax
Why for Utah: Sell markkanen for 2 Sacramento picks. Swap a likely low 2027 pick for a slightly higher variance future one

Poeltl
Markkanen
Ingram
Agbaji
IQ

Sabonis
Barnes
Murray
Lavine
Schroder

Not gonna make a real thread to avoid getting flamed by other raptors fans

I think I prefer the picks, but it is close enough to be hard to decide. If it happened I wouldn't be mad.

RFA sucks, and when a player is on a tanking team its even worse, they sit a healthy player or restrict his minutes, so they can lose more games, then hold the same player hostage with RFA.

Agreed, I think RFA is tilted towards teams and against the player too much, but can't think of an improvement.
