How many teams will be over the 1. and 2. apron next season?
I'm looking at the numbers from different places and they don't add up. Is there any solid source for this?

Cleveland is looking like the only 2nd apron team.
Dallas, GSW, Minny and the Knicks are all looking like they will possibly be 1st apron teams unless they cut some payroll.
I can't see anyone else staying in that 1st apron area as of right now.

You mean 26/27?
For this season Spotrac is your aource, for next season, it'll depend what teams will.do.
Cavs are over the 2nd Apron
Mavs will likely be below the 2nd Apron but as it stands, they will be over.
GSW and NYK will be at the 2nd Apron but nelow it most likely, IF MitchRob plays out of his mind, Knicka may be over the 2nd.
Wolves will hover around the 1st, maybe over maybe under.
Magic will likely be at the 2nd Apron but below it.
The rest is up in the air.

For 26-27 OKC currently has the highest payroll on the books with Jalen & Chet's max extensions starting. Ownership will have to either pay a large amount of tax or Presti will have to get creative in trading some higher priced pieces for more bargain type deals.

They have a team option on IHart and Dort's contracts.

But neither would simply hav their options declined they have value over cap space for most teams. Hartenstein is the most likely to get moved in a cap reducing trade IMO they'd look to move him for a more bargain big if ownership wants to reduce overall salary.

We'll see...
I think they either waive him or keep him and pay tax, Dort remains, they are 24 mils over the 2nd Apron, waiving him and just signing their draft picks will have them slightly over the 2nd.

The Rockets will be over. They'll have two rookie extensions kicking in and Eason needs a new deal.

Teams like the Bulls, Jazz and Wizards are well positioned to get good role players via trade for nothing but cap space if they so choose next summer. Portland was before deciding to trade for Jrue and signing Dame. I fully expect Cronin to be fired after the team is sold.
The first real reset year will be the summer of 2028.

Yes... GS, Dallas, Minny, and NYK have all pretty much made offseason moves to go right up to (within a min salary player being added or less) the 2nd apron.
I think teams/owners have realized just how taxing that 2nd apron is. I'm kind of surprised that the Cavs stayed in it to be honest but I think with some of the injuries in the East and everything else they are likely feeling like this is their shot to get to the Finals. I wouldn't be surprised at all, if the Cavs fail to make the Finals, to see a cost cutting move from them next summer(summer of 2026).

The 2nd apron’s big immediate penalty is aggregation, but the Cavs don’t have any realistic aggregation targets even if they could. Otherwise they’re still limited in taking more money they send out and don’t have the pick capital to make a big move otherwise.
The second penalty is the freezing of future picks, and possibly shifting those till the end of the round if you stay above. That’s enforcing the team to be long-term responsible as long as you aren’t above the 2nd apron for 3 seasons, and the Cavs will have lots of players coming off contract in 2 years (Hunter and Strus being enough to cut major salary).
The level of salary the Cavs would need to cut would’ve been offloading Hunter, or Strus + Wade. There was no way to avoid the 2nd apron while maintaining depth. About the only deal that might’ve made sense was a Garland/Hunter/Allen trade for Giannis, if that would’ve been enough.

Stayed in it? This is the first season the Cavs have been in the tax, let alone the 2nd apron since LBJ left the 2nd time.

I’m sure any teams that are close will try to get out of it next summer.

You would need a team below the cap that is willing to give you assets to absorb their contracts.
I am not so sure you have someone ready to do that.
