Giannis' family moved permanently in Athens, Greece

His wife Mariah along with their 4 kids and his mother Veronica have permanently settled in the complex of houses the family bought back in 2023, in Athens.
His 2 older kids(5 year old Liam Charles and 4 year old Maverick Diaper) have begun attending the preschool of the College of Athens.
Mariah prefers Athens than Milwaukee.

In the same complex lives his brother Kostas and his family, along with their older brother Frances.
His younger brother Alex is also in Greece, playing basketball in Thessaloniki, the second biggest city (around 310 miles distance).

That means that only Giannis and Thanassis have stayed in the US.

Pretty big news if you consider the importance of his family to his life.
I don't think anyone expected that. His kids growing up in Greece show his future plans.
His contract ends in 2026 with a player option for 2027.
How certain are we that he will continue playing in the NBA in 2 years from now? Especially if we take into account his recent comments that he would like to play in Europe for 4-5 seasons.
He will stay in the US without his family? Giannis?

If I remember correctly, Valanciunas' family also moved back to Lithuania or some other place in Europe. Can happen for a few years. Jonas will probably go back to Europe once his current contract expires and he's three years older than Giannis.

However, I do not think Giannis will play in the NBA for six or seven more years. Maybe the latest talk about how he wants to play in Greece for years to come were more than just being nice to Greek journalists. I get it. He has already gained generational wealth in terms of money, won a title, multiple awards etc. It's his home country, his family is there, better weather, great food (although I don't know what the food in Milwaukee is like). Wouldn't be surprised if he left the NBA while still in his prime.

When you get here, you know there will be people around, but it’s good that my kids can grow up in a safe environment, go to the beach, ride their bicycles or play on the waterslides, all without me worrying too much. I’m also thinking 10 to 15 years into the future when they’ll be older”.

Well, most people do not want to leave their home country, and if they do, it is cause of Economy or worse, war, worries Americans almost never had. But as non Greek and non American, if I had hundreds of millions of Euros/dollars and I had to retire in one of these countries, its Greece dude, very few places beat that. Out of American territories, maybe Miami or Hawaii could compete with Athens in this regard, but as a history enthusiast, to me it would be amazing to live in one of the most significant and oldest cities of human history.

Eh - as an American, I’ve been actively searching for a new place to live for the past 10+ years. We have a shortlist already. Plenty of incredible spots in Europe and Australia/NZ. Haven’t had much experience in Asia yet but I expect there are a lot of high quality areas there as well.
