OT: What is the most brutal way to be knocked out of the playoffs?

Post#1 » by Dr Aki » Fri Oct 10, 2025 2:44 am

Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering just had the brainfarts of all brainfarts.

Phillies down 2-1, in LA, Phillies need to win or go home.

It's the bottom of the 11th inning, 2 Outs, Bases loaded, ball is grounded meekly back to Kerkering, who bobbles the ball, still plenty of time to throw to 1st, but then panics and throws to Home instead of 1st base for the force out, completely misses the catcher anyway and the Dodgers walk off on a fielding error.

He had so much time to throw to 1st

What are the most brutal ways to be knocked out of the NBA playoffs? Or any playoffs for that matter?

I can only think of Baggio at WC1994 right now

Its a legit question. This the equivalent of a player calling a time out with no time outs left, or walking the ball in bounds with time on the clock. He asked a good question that relates to all sports and used a example to base it from.

I think that was more great execution on the Heat's end despite the Spurs missing 2 of their last 4 FTs

I think a bigger example that was worse would've been Nick Anderson

The way Philly got knocked out by Toronto I’d imagine is the worst way to go out.

Ask Red Sox fans about game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. But as a Yankee fan I can only gloat so much because the next year happened....

Other examples off the top of my head

-Chris Webber in the 93 Finals
-Trailblazers blowing a 15 pt 4th qtr lead in the WCF
-Falcons blow 25pt lead in Superbowl LI
-Lillard shot over George(cause even now it's still a ridiculously tough shot)
Stephon Diggs TD to beat the Saints(still can't believe that sequence actually happened)

No, no issue, just wondering why included; baseball/soccer vids instead of basketball, I mean it's basketball forum after all :) I get op using the youtube, just not keen on watching baseball/soccer vidds in a basketball forum.

Derrick Rose suffering an injury that derailed his career in the first game of the playoffs was brutal. I guess the Bulls won the game, but that sucked.

Netherlands played Italy in the semi-finals of the Euro Cup, held in the Netherlands.

The Dutch had an absolutely stacked team, were crushing the competition having won each match leading up to the game while holding a 13-3 goal scoring advantage throughout those matches.

During the semifinals match, the Netherlands dominated possession and created 8 times as many shots on goal and +17 total shots. Italy conceded two penalties during regulation, both of which the Netherlands missed, and Italy had to play with 10 men for most of the game due to a red card after about half an hour of play. Italy's first shot on goal came 80 minutes into the match.

In the end, following a 0-0 draw in regulation and overtime, Italy won through a penalty shootout, extending the penalty curse of the Dutch squad which had been kicked out of 7 of the last 9 tournaments in penalty shoot outs.

The Rockets missing 27 threes in a row is a brutal way to go in game 7 in Houston

I think the most brutal way is when you have the lead for the entire game, maybe even a very large lead, and you lose it in the last minute or on a buzzer beater.

Lakers v Blazers Game 7 back in 2000 (?). Or Horrys buzzer beater in game 4 against the Kings come to mind.

Go whine somewhere else. We don't care what you think this forum is for. It's called "OT" for a reason.
