Tre Jones discussion

Post#1 » by sco » Fri Oct 10, 2025 1:53 pm

I'm a big fan of this kid so I thought a thread was in order. He went down with an injury about halfway through our strong run last season, but before he did, he showed the same sort of stuff we've seen during the preseason. What a great signing! He's a real difference maker on both ends of the court. He's only 6'1 but so is TJ McConnell, and that dude is a force. He's only 25 unlike TJ, so IMO he can give you at least 24 good minutes a game.

I feel like Jones benefitted from watching CP3. He can handle the rock. He's not Giddey in terms of his passing vision, but he's a good passer and able to set guys up. After his defense, his ability to get to the rim and finish at the rim amongst the trees is his next most amazing trait. He's not Jalen Brunson, but he's the sort of guy who may end-up leading our team in +- this season.

I'm rooting for him to get at least 24 mpg this season.

I think he'll be 3rd in minutes behind Giddey and White at the guard spot.

Could see us using a Jones-White-Giddey-Matas-Center closing lineup at time this season.

Nice topic!

I don't understand why the Spurs didn't play/value him more. Are we missing something? Were they?

I'm also reminded that Hollinger's BORD$ formula gave Tre Jones a value of $21.4 million a year. There is the possibility that the Bulls got an incredible value contract with him.

Bingo.

Billy trusts Tre because he makes all the right plays and he’s a stud defender. He has a calming composure on the floor for the whole team.

He will be our 6th man and closer many nights.

The issue will be shooting. Unless Giddey takes a step as a shooter and Buz becomes a high volume 3pt shooter we won’t have enough spacing.

Tre is much like Giddey as a shooter. No gravity. Not enough volume. This makes life much harder on Buz and Coby.

Billy about Tre… “Incredible winning attributes.”

Billy saying we need two ball handlers out there at all times. Seems like Giddey Coby and Tre are those handlers. Didn’t mention Huerter or Ayo as handlers.

He's a very good player. High quality backup and a solid spot starter. He's not a good shooter, but he doesn't hurt you on offense. He's a low mistake player and gives the team some much needed stability off the bench.

His contract is a flat out steal.

He was a bad 3P shooter.
Rookie year: 3-5 total so didn't even try to shoot
Soph: 19%
3rd: 28%
4th: 33%
5th: 30%

He comes to Chicago and he shot 11/22. Hopefully that shot has come together and it's not just a hot streak, but 22 shots isn't much of a sample.

Don't follow the Spurs, but he was a bad 3P shooter to be considered a starter.

Yeah he sucked as a 3 point shooter.

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

At the 5:20 mark of the video he mentions Josh, Coby and Ayo with Tre. So, two out of the four. It makes sense, as he says, since teams will want to pick up the primary ball handler full court to try to slow down the pace. It makes me wonder if Yuki could be the 5th of that group.

Missed Ayo in that moment. Sounds better. He have Huerter included in that too but he wasn’t playing.

I can't find a reference to Kevin in the video.

He's quickly becoming a favorite of mine with his energy and active hands on defense. Some of our guards are gonna get less time than they deserve because we have so many solid guards. It's a good problem to have.

I opened this thread and was planning to post "who?" but I appreciate your thoughts on this. I'll be checking him out this season.

One thing AK seems to be good at is finding these bargain guards who shine in advanced analytics.
Caruso, Ball, and now Tre. You could even throw Ayo in the mix although he’s never been great in the analytics department.

Our offense looked the best in our two games so far when Giddey and Jones were sharing the floor. Might have just been the way Leaveland was defending Giddey but having a second creator made a massive difference compared to the stagnancy of Heurter and Okoro. I think Coby will replicate some of that effect when he returns but since Jones is a plus defender the three of them can also share the floor.

They're our two best playmakers, Tre is about 8 assists per 36 career, 8 apg would put him in the top 10 of the NBA. But we really need him for when Giddey goes to the bench, Coby is not great as a floor general and we need him to score anyway.

I really like how similar Tre is to McConnell with the size, pesky defense, and high assists except 10 years younger. Also not sure if he's as clutch as McConnell, I guess we'll find out.

But he definitely fits AK's Indiana-copycat plan.
