There was 2 times in September where he threw more than 22 pitches and next pitched on 1 day rest. And gave up no runs. In August he had a 27 pitch outing and came back the next day and gave up no runs. In July he threw 23 against the Dodgers and came back on one day rest and shut down Seattle. In May he threw 36, came back on one day rest and allowed no runs. I guess my point is he's come back from throwing that many pitches (more actually) on one day rest (or no days rest) and has been great. Every single time this season. I just don't buy in to the "it didn't work so it was the wrong move" theory. Especially when it's worked under the same situation 100% of the time this season. We'll just have to agree to disagree.
I've heard a lot of pitchers say the innings are more relevant than the pitches, mainly because of the process of pumping up your adrenaline and focus only to stop and restart over and over again.
eta: I'm guessing when it comes to long term fatigue over the course of a season and overall arm health, total pitches matter a lot more. You only have so many violent unnatural movements like that in ya before the body says nope.
