Jared Butler, our new starting Point Guard
Good opinions about him in all Sixers forums. Younger, taller than Tyus Jones and better numbers with the Sixers than him last season:

He and Gillespie will compete for 2nd string. I don't think Goodwin is better than these two. But "Our next starting guard".... is wrong.

Keith Smith:
Jared Butler's contract with the Phoenix Suns is a non-guaranteed training camp deal, a league source told @spotrac.

I remember people hyping up Tyus for years and then he got here and stinked.
At least this guy has no hype around him, it's better like that. So the disappointment wouldn't be massive.

I still like Tyus Jones. I blame the situation, and having KD, Beal, Booker + the coaching.

I think Tyus in today's NBA really should be a 2nd stringer. He's really good at what he does and I agree we under-utilised his skillset but at the same time, I also think we over-utilised him by forcing him to start which really hurt our team defense as the key weak link in the back court. At the end of the day, he isn't a dominant PG who orchestrates a high powered offense. He's more of a steady hand that you can bring off the bench and have confidence the offense isn't going to drop off dramatically when the starting PG takes his rest.

Not impressed in Preseason with him at all. He has hustle but he is trying too hard to be seen, resulting in being selfish and not consistent with his shot. Each time he has the ball it is not enjoyable to watch, he is not looking to make anyone else better. Perhaps Nash can tell him what the role of a Point Guard should be on this team. Concluding from the 3 preseasons games alone Gillespie is way more impressive but Gillespie and Butler are trying to prove 2 different things right now to the coach I guess.

Re: Jared Butler, our new starting Point Guard
It's not about if he shoots a lot. It's about if those shots are bad quality, whilst in the context of how many other guys can create shots off the bench.
Never seen him play but if I had a dime for how many old heads here complained that we didn't have a pass first PG in the year 2025 (a near relic archetype of player nowadays) I'd have a Ferrari.
Again not saying that he is a good player I'm just saying that him looking for his shot first isn't actually a bad thing but rather it's if he is taking bad shots and we can't get better ones. But I also am not saying he's taking good shots because again I haven't watched him.

Re: Jared Butler, our new starting Point Guard
I think these highlights show what he is capable of bringing to the team.
35 pts 9 asts 7 rbds 1 stls 0 tos ... is a pretty good stat line against Luka, Reaves, Smart, and Ayton
Great backup option for PG considering we have only Gillispie behind Booker.
Goodwin played well too but his offense doesn't seem as polished as Butler

Re: Jared Butler, our new starting Point Guard
Expanding on my earlier post in here my hunch has been that we need a creator off the bench. Basically we need another guy who can get shots up so hopefully it's this guy.

Re: Jared Butler, our new starting Point Guard
Had to get below the 15 player threshold prior to opening night and apparently they thought that the other dude they kept was a better fit? I can't say, but I think they'll regret this.Fo-Real wrote:

Re: Jared Butler, our new starting Point Guard
They don't need to be below 15 for opening night. 15 is the max, 14 the minimum (with temporary exceptions) during the season.
I imagine its just a money thing. He was non guaranteed along with Goodwin, so they kept one and waived the other cause they didnt feel like they needed both? Seems like it was always a competition between the 2 and one was always gonna go. I think they're just slightly over the tax line and should have eyes to get under by the trade deadline, so it just gets them that much closer.

Re: Jared Butler, our new starting Point Guard
Should have kept Butler because he probably has a higher ceiling that Goodwin.
Like I think Goodwin played well last season but I don't really see how he can elevate his game much more than that while Butler is really the one that could be a dynamic spark off the bench like Eddie House or Barbosa was during the SSOL days.
Just watch Butler go sign with another team and become an impactful player elsewhere because this FO is not really a good evaluator of talent.
