The Tennessee Titans have commenced their head coaching search without delay, according to sources who told ESPN that research and conversations with potential candidates are already underway. Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, both former head coaches, are under consideration.
The Titans plan to cast a \"wide net\" to identify the next coach, with team president of football operations Chad Brinker leading the process.
The organization plans to prioritize candidates with strong leadership qualities and extensive head coaching experience. Brinker previously oversaw the Green Bay Packers\' search that resulted in hiring Matt LaFleur. Assistant GM Dave Ziegler brings additional search experience from the New Orleans Saints\' process that hired Kellen Moore last offseason.
\"It is way too early in the process to have any real idea how it will shake out,\" according to sources involved in the search.
Before accelerating the coaching search, the Titans\' immediate priority involves simplifying the offense for rookie quarterback Cam Ward. Ward currently ranks 30th in passer rating at 67.3, 22nd in passing yards with 1,101 and is tied for 33rd with just three touchdown passes entering Sunday\'s game against New England.
Former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel will lead the New England Patriots into Tennessee on Sunday in his first game against his previous team. Vrabel coached the Titans since 2018 before being fired following the 2023 season.
The Titans\' search represents an opportunity to identify a coach who can maximize Ward\'s potential while providing the defensive and organizational leadership the franchise seeks moving forward.
