I agree it was bad for the Pels, the only benefits I see are what nate said: durability and timeline. Neither of those qualities really matter though if attached to a bad player

Mostly future cap relief with the shorter contract. Being a good locker room vet mentor is a side benefit.

I disagree with OP about hoping to resell McCollum. I just don't think that it's plausible. With his contract and overall limitations he can score his usual 20+ ppg and still be seen as a bad contract around the league.
