I like this deal a lot actually. Rolen has the ability to match Glaus's ability offensively (with less pop), but he's one of, if not the best defensive 3B in the game.

I just saw it on the front page of sportsnet as well. That's a pretty good indication (due to ownership).

I'd like the deal. I prefer Rolen (with no numbers or facts to back-up my opinion).

They are making the same per year but Rolen has one more year left. I don't really like the idea of that due to both players being injury prone, but it isn't as if we have a lot of minor league infielders that are rising through the ranks.

It's a sideways move with the potential to be a backwards one, IMO. Glaus is better offensively, Rolen's better defensively, they're both injury prone, and Rolen's older. It could work out, but my money is on it not going so well.

It's looking like it. What Rolen's contract like? I honestly think Glaus is deteriorating so he won't be worth what he's getting. So this could be a good move.

I like this move. Glaus looked less and less mobile as the season went on last year. Providing he's healthy, I love what Rolen brings to the table. He's excellent defensively, and he can put up a 275 - 300 avg with 18 - 25 HR's, 30 - 45 2B's, and 80 - 105 RBI's.

THe downside is if last years injury woes continue to plague him. Will he no longer posess the power he's had his whole career?

Even if that's the case, it's really no riskier than Glaus. When both are healthy, I think Rolen is the slightly better player.

Glaus really couldn't play on the turf. Rolen is a bit of a step down in power, but we have enough. I like the defensive upgrade. Glaus was probably the worst defensive player on the team, and now we have a top 3b defensively. In fact we are better than average pretty much everywhere now. Should help with the young pitchers to have a good defense behind them.

From a defensive standpoint, this is a very good move. Rolen is top shelf while Glaus is looking more and more like a 1B/DH down the road.

Both are injury prone so I'm not sure who gains there.

And while Glaus has probably been better offensively recently, Rolen has been as good or better in the past. Rolen has 6 years with an OPS at .890 or better since 1998, Glaus only 3.

I think that Rolan is more expensive but it's marginal.

All in all, I think that this was more a positive move than a sideways move because of the defensive situation. Plus all things being equal bringing in a new player might give him an added spark to have a big year.

Not entirely sure what I think of this. It definitely fits with the pitching and defense philosophy to which J.P. has transitioned, but Rolen is older, more expensive, and even more banged up. I would be surprised if he matched Glaus in OPS, and 20 HRs might be his upper limit at this juncture.

Save for at catcher, it might make us the best defensive team in the league, though.

I like the move. Rolen is better defensively and is a better fit in our lineup at the 6 spot.

I like this move too. If anything it's a neutral move...but we were all losing faith in Glaus and the turf really isn't suiting him. They're both overpaid but we get big defensive upgrade securing our infield nicely. I would prefer more offense but even on bluejays.com they have something up, and it just says how a change of scenary could really benefit these 2 players. So yeah, I like this move.

The way Glaus' knees/feet/ankles/back were going, he wasnt going to be able to play 3B full time anymore, and definitely not be effective enough defensively. Rolen is a stud defender.

Both are declining, and aging. Glaus easily has more natural pop, Rolen does a better job hitting for average. Overall, fairly sideways move, though I suspect it is just JP finally seeing the value of defense?

As for the financial part, I would hope the Jays get a couple of million for JP to save for a new 47 year old DH in a season or two.

Glaus with all that HR and Offence? He hit what 20 somthing last year nothing big.

I think this is a big move for the Jays interms of moving forward.

If both were 100% healthy, then Rolen is clearly the better player. He won't hit as many HR's, but Rolen will hit for a higher average, get on base at a better clip, end up with a better OPS (he's spent most of his time in a pitcher's park) and play MUCH better defense. The problem is, neither of them stay healthy, so it's really pick your poision as far as injury is concerned. It's impossible to predict how many games they will play or how well they will do. I'd imagine both will miss time in 2008.

It's more of a lateral move, with Rolen being far more conducive to Ricciardi's new philosophy (defense) than Glaus was. I think the most surprising aspect of this, to me at least, is Rolen waiving his no-trade clause to come to Toronto. Either Toronto's reputation around the league is better than I thought, or Rolen just really wanted to get away from LaRussa. I recall Toronto was one of the teams Rolen didn't want to play for (or I might be confusing him with Jim Edmonds).
