Will Richard Thread

Post#1 » by Twinkie defense » Tue Oct 21, 2025 7:58 pm

Four-year college player, 56th overall pick, came from the NCAA champs - what could be a more Dunleavy-player and a guy Kerr would like?

(It's great when the coach and GM are on the same page.)

And through the preseason there has been a lot of gushing about Will Richard coming from the Warriors - not that he's gonna light things up, but that he knows what he's doing, knows where to be on the court (and you know Kerr loves those traits), a 6' 3" guard who can defend up, decent college three-point shooter.

Warriors obviously targeted Richard in the draft - sending the Grizzlies the draft rights to Jahmai Mashack, the draft rights to Justinian Jessup, and a future conditional second-round pick - and he has all the looks of another surprise second round pick who becomes a rotation player for the Warriors.

I like his game. He was clutch in the national championship game. Looks like a keeper..

Oh dang, we gave up Jessup’s rights? Maaaaaan……. That hurts.

(Is he even still playing in Australia? Haven’t heard his name in a couple of years…..)

Richard looks like a prototype “high floor, low ceiling” guy who will be in the league for a while….. never a star, but a good bench guy. Doesn’t hurt to have another guy like him, but with tempered expectations.
If I don't have anything funny to say, can I still have a signature?

Jessup actually was last playing with the same German team that Noa Essengue and Ben Saraf were on (Ratiopharm Ulm). Looks like he's moved on this season though to FC Bayern. I actually noticed him while I was "scouting" those two guys and thought it was wild to see him again.

Right now, he looks like the second best guard on this team (other than Steph).

Kerr is going to try and mold him into a GP2/Melton hybrid, which is absolutely the best potential role for him.

All I ask is he doesn't play with Steph and Podz at the same time. Those lineups are just going to kill us. Kerr has to choose one Keebler Elf at a time to play with Steph.

With Melton and the other Curry back on the roster, the smallish guard room will be crowded. Someone may have to go at the deadline. Richard should be a keeper as a young inexpensive player with promise.

Taht's the thing. We have control of Richard for 4 years at a ridiculously low cost. It's why they keep bringing TJD back. He's basically a free roster spot. If there's a world where he's basically as good as Podz or even slightly worse, why on earth would we pay Podz $30M? That would be insane.

I wonder what we could get for Podz and Moody. I don’t see Moody as THAT much better than Richard. I definitely don’t want to pay 25+ to Podz.

I could see Podz getting Moody money.

with braun getting 25M, there's no world where podz takes less than 30. If we could get him for under the NTMLE, I'd love to bring him back on 5/70 but there's no chance he'd be back for such a small deal.

Braun is coming off a season averaging 15 a game with an absolutely absurd TS%, absurd advanced stats, and solid defense and nonstop energy. And even that only got him 25m a year.

Camara and Daniels are two of the best defensive players in the league with some offensive skills too…. Sharpe is gonna score 20 a game probably…

Only Keegan Murray fleeced his team on an extension… and it was the Kings obviously.

I don’t get why we are assuming Podz is just instantly going to get a deal making him severely overpaid. And if he has a season anywhere near as good as Braun we would GLADLY give him 30m… but that almost certainly is not happening.

There is about zero reasons to trade Podz or Moody considering we have zero depth at SF or PG, positions they can cover.

And since this is a Richard thread, i’ll also mention that there isn’t a reason to trade people just to get guys like Richard or Seth or Melton etc minutes… depth is good!

To me, Richard's game is already ahead of Podz. Got a 4 year contract for cheap. Trade Podz before he is expensive... while he is hyped up still.

I love Richard's D. He just need to shoot a little better to grow his game. He could replace both GP2 and Podz... while getting back a real backup pg.

Sure. But he also can't dribble, create for himself or others, can only score in transition or when being spoon fed by Jokic.

Podz, while having almost the exact opposite skills, is also a valuable player and I doubt he'd get less than Braun did. Braun also got overpaid because he's one of the few draft picks that found success in Den but, with Podz, we may have the same problem.
