He got hunted on defense, didn't make a shot, was -17, and had 2 turnovers to his 3 assists. I think people are piling on him too soon, but he was awful tonight.

I believe Tyus will settle down once qe get over Suggs minutes restrictions.

However it is alarming to see how every opponent is targeting him. Even those in his height range

One of the first proper PGs Orlando has had in over a decade and we're running him out of the building after Game 1. Very RealGM. Very Orlando Magic fanbase.

Cmon people. On his salary, his skillset for the Magic is a godsend and 1 game won't change that.

Lol After 1 game. If you wanna overreact how about the soon Max Player Banchero Elephant looking in Preseason & the 1st game again like a inefficient volume scorer. That problem is much more important and worth to monitoring than a cheap backup guard having a bad 1st. game.

We were okay with Tyus because we knew he had Jonathan Isaac to back him up on defense. If JI sucks, that compounds the problem.

Davion Mitchell looked like Shaq against Tyus, and Davion is small. I expect Mosely to cut his minutes if he can't play winning ball soon. He was -17.

This why Jones was worth only $7mil. He will be that bench guy that can hit some 3's and throw the ball around some playing 15-24mpg.

Way better than AB. AB should be worried about his minutes.

Terrible take. AB wasn't good but Tyus was TERRIBLE
ESPN net points

PlayeroNetdNet
Tyus Jones-5.8-1.3
Anthony Black-2.6-0.7

What do you think is more likely, the guy who has LEAD THE NBA in assist to turn over ratio multiple years, to adjust and create with all these weapons.

Or for AB to learn how to run a pick and roll, and pass the ball as a point guard, and create at double the rate per min (what he would need to be close to as efficient)

I am not saying AB has no potential, but he is no point guard and im not sure why we keep playing him like one.

The fact that Tyus is even on the roster after signing Bane should be the clearest indicator of who IS the real elephant. To compare his play with a guy who did just fine in the NAW role is silly. AB is now getting pushed out by TdS, not Tyus...AB's =/- is nice but he's not a better PG than Tyus. Tyus had a disappointing year last year...he was still 2nd only to Hali in assist/turnover...he has clearly been the best reserve PG in the league for years. He's too flawed defensively to be a great starter, but he's the best true PG on the roster by a mile.

This thread will age poorly. I could understand 10 games in, and with the way we roll even 5 games in. But 1 game? This just means he'll suck for the next 20 or blow the door off the hinges next 10.

It's one game, so too early obviously, but he is clearly not a good fit with the starters, we already have plenty of scoring there and Bane, Franz and Paolo give us enough ballhandling that his ooffensive skills don't add enough to make up for his defensive shortcomings.

AB on defense was good.

My eyes are on Tyus and JI. Tyus has a disappointing season last year.

Tyus needs more run for sure. But Tyus without Suggs or AB to make up for his defense is rough.

It's 1 game, but yea he didn't look great out there. Gotta give it a little more time but I also wasn't expecting anything great from Tyus. I expect him to come in, hit some 3's, and be able to bring the ball up the court without turning it over from time to time. That's about it.

Tyus Jones was awful.
The offense died when he was on the court.
They might as well use a 3 and D instead and let Banchero or Wagner be the point forward.
It's not like, he played 10 minutes. He played 24 minutes!
But hey it's just one game. I just feel he's not a good fit on this young, athletic team IMHO.
I hope I'm wrong for the Magic.

I think people have the same problem with Dallas roster.

On paper, there was a team all those names you would have thought could make them a potential no 1 seed.

But age, has taken its toll we too know what its like to field aged Dominque Wilkins, Vince Carter, Patrick Ewing ect.

Disappointing only by HIS high bar...he was still second ONLY to Haliburton in assist/turnover ratio. 5.3/1.1 (on a dysfunctional PHX team)
*He led the league in a/t for six consecutive seasons...the most in history. That's not by accident - it's super elite in an area that was vacant in ORL last season.

*He has broken the record for t/a 3x

2/5 from 3...41.4%

89.5% FT...admittedly low volume but the dude is clearly a shooter

He has weaknesses and strengths that suit our second unit...but don't dissect this guy like he's some high-pick who hasn't delivered anything at his alleged position. AB may have a bright future in this league - but it will never look anything like Tyus' proven one. This is his 11th season - we know who he is and what he does. If it doesn't happen here, it'll only be due to being forced out of his proven role or by the team or the scheme proving incapable of playing more cohesive offensively and reverting to playing in the mud like they did all year.

Just like I wish KCP the best and will express zero surprise when his shooting reverts back to his historical highs. Sometimes a proven guy fits, sometimes they don't. When you sign a vet, it's rarely fruitful to try to make them into something new. I hope that doesn't happen here (again).

Tyus Jones is Jalen Suggs insurance.

Because lets be real.. Suggs gets injured often.

Anthony Black is the bizarro Tyus Jones where he can defend and do nothing else. He isnt an alternative as they have completely opposite skillsets. He wont get hunted on defense but provides nothing on offense outside of standing in a corner.

NOW if you want to make the case for Jase Richardson to be a better alternative, then I'm all in on that case. Maybe he's the exception and not the rule to rookies being less than great. Regardless, I'd rather move Anthony Black anyway and give Jase all of his minutes instead.
