I’m hearing Mitch has just been arrested by the FBI they’re investigating how he has the worst career playoff FT percentage in NBA history at 39.2%. They said there’s no other explanation a professional athlete could miss that many FTs unless it was gambling and point shaving it can’t just be attributed to sheer incompetence. Stay strong big guy I’m sure you can earn a pardon

This seems like illegal poker operation thing, same thing A-Rod and others got busted in, what, 15 years ago?

So, this doesn't seem like it should be a big deal; it's more about state regulation of kinds of gambling.

BUT, the mob is involved, so you have to consider they could compromise someone, leads to other "deals"

But mostly it seems like illegal high stakes poker.

I'm just annoyed they didn't legalize cocaine along with it. Why some people get their vices legitimized and not me?

This is the "LOOK HERE" so it looks like the government/league is doing something while the real criminal stuff around online gambling continues merrily along (dons tinfoil hat)

Billups arrested for playing Texas Hold’em where the government was unable to tax the house. He needs to be locked up for a long time.

If they also played fantasy football for money he may be looking at 20+ years.

Yeah but gambling is very similar to drug addiction does affect everyone else around you. I’d be less worried about it if people still had to go to a casino to gamble but with Silicon Valley perfecting getting us addicted to their apps and adding another addictive element all in you’re pocket I’m worried we’re going to have an opioid crisis level situation with sports gambling.

i'm not saying it's a great situation but criminalizing them is not the answer to me just like drugs. drug addicts don't need jail, they need rehab. a lot of them need mental health counseling. if you want to get high and you're not committing other crimes to support your habit, i don't view you as a criminal. you've had people locked up who aint even addicts, they're just out partying or whatever and got caught with enough to make it a felony. there's no easy solution to these kind of issues unfortunately.

I agree with most of this. I’m just pushing back on the idea that doing drugs and gambling are victimless crimes. Not supporting the idea of locking these people up. From personal experience with the opioid crisis I know how difficult dealing with someone’s addiction is outside of the threat of them going to jail. I’m just seeing a decent amount of parallels between how those opioids were pushed and prescribed and how sports gambling has integrated itself into all sports media. I’m just gonna hope I’m wrong and there isn’t going to be massive lawsuits in a decade from all the lives ruined by podcasts brought to you by fanduel.

Personal gambling I agree with you. Drug abuse mostly hurts the addicts. These two weren’t arrested for gambling but almost certainly for altering the outcome of games to steal $millions in winnings. So yeah the addictions are similar but the crime is unique to our two NBA guys.

From CBS sports:
Joel Embiid looks like a shell of himself during 20 painful minutes in 76ers' season-opening win vs. Celtics

Embiid managed to play just 19 games last season and 39 games the year before that. He's had four surgeries on the same left meniscus, a portion of which was removed in February of 2024, with the most recent being this past April. He's also had three foot surgeries. He's a massive human being -- 7-foot and nearly 300 pounds. It's not a matter of if the knees and feet of a man that size, who's had that many surgeries, are going to give out. It's only a matter of when.

Let's hope that time hasn't fully arrived for Embiid, but if it hasn't, it sure looks like it's getting close.

the conversation wasn't about these guys throwing games. it was about sports gambling being legal.

It’s called the NBA, T. Basically we get a player or coach to throw all the games and we bet on it. The whole things rigged. Vito thinks we should give it a try. It’s basic economics Tone
