Because lets be real.. Suggs gets injured often.

Anthony Black is the bizarro Tyus Jones where he can defend and do nothing else. He isnt an alternative as they have completely opposite skillsets. He wont get hunted on defense but provides nothing on offense outside of standing in a corner.

NOW if you want to make the case for Jase Richardson to be a better alternative, then I'm all in on that case. Maybe he's the exception and not the rule to rookies being less than great. Regardless, I'd rather move Anthony Black anyway and give Jase all of his minutes instead.

Tyus Jones as insurance for Suggs? Haha. I needed a laugh.

Who is then?

11 year nba vet that leads the league in a/to ratio for multiple seasons? or a 2/3 defender likely bust? Also we just drafted his replacement in the depth chart.

Only one of these players is a point guard and has proven that to be the case.

I spent 5 years laughing at your Fultz takes fwiw.

You still stuck on Fultz?

We ain’t going anywhere if Tyus replaces Suggs. Seems like a simple concept.

The team and offense aren’t optimised yet to get the most out of our guys. Tyus had some shortfalls but he was doing things our team needs, like making on-point leading passes. When our guys get better at predicting that and getting in to those lanes/space more often it’ll unlock a lot more.

AB played more like a wing last night. Even when he went off ball in to the corner he was still ready (and used) as an outlet, and he attacked the rim (mixed results). I wouldn’t be surprised if AB was focusing on his scoring more this season whilst Tyus/Franz handle playmaking.

AB, Suggs and Franz were an elite combo. AB, TDS and Goga were high end bench producers last night. Tyus brought some good and (a lot of) bad.

Isaac looked like there’s no place for him on this roster anymore. Dead minutes. Give them to Penda, Jase or Jett.

Tyus isnt "replacing" anyone.

He's a fill in when/if Suggs is injured while Jase Richardson steps into his role as a primary backup at some point.

No other reason of signing him to a one year deal after drafting a 6 foot point guard.

For years Magic fans dreamed for Tyus Jones to come here to be our starting PG and now after 1 game played they can't wait to kick him out

Way better than AB. AB should be worried about his minutes.

Terrible take. AB wasn't good but Tyus was TERRIBLE

Anthony Black-2.6-0.7

Black played most of his minutes at SG. Jones had to sub in early for PG minutes with the starters and not the bench, out-of-rotation, because of Suggs poor play (vest win and all; Suggs played poorly).

What??

The only time Suggs played poorly was at the start of the game with two silly fouls.

Extremely efficient, timely charge, timely steal + bucket, timely clutch bucket, all in limited minutes.

Tyus played bad and was hunted on defense but he still made a bunch of real PG plays. AB played like a 3&D player again. Nothing new. He didnt create anything. He attacked when the defender wasnt in defensive stance and passed the ball to the player next to him at the 3 point line when the defender had a defensive stance. Other than that he stand in the corner & run the break.

Don’t worry we have Tyus to fill in for Suggs while he isn’t on the court.

Interesting to note: Tyus didn’t have a monopoly on the backup point guard minutes in Game 1. There were 48 total PG minutes. Suggs logged 17, leaving 31 up for grabs. Tyus played 24 of those, giving him about a 77% share of the backup PG load. That’s something to monitor. As Suggs’ role scales up, if Tyus can’t increase his share of those minutes, his overall playing time will drop, which is exactly what I expect to happen.

Tyus is the Suggs backup plan. This is why a PG who is out of the league today was the starting point guard on an NBA playoff team. This shouldn't even be questioned.

I have 0% concern for Tyus and as I said this thread should age poorly.

As for AB / Jase - yes. They are also the stopgaps.

Lastly - we have fricken Bane here who is already better then Suggs + KCP. If you count Suggs return as an addition we have a completely different backcourt mindset now.

If Tyus’ assist/turnover ratio plummets this year, it'll be because a bunch of guys get hit in the nose and bobble leading passes they’ve never seen before from their teammates. I’d guess the bulk of our assists over the last couple years were simple kick outs to spot up shooters, not real motion and fluid uptempo ball movement. Tyus doesn’t dribble over half court and hand it to Paolo too often, if he’s being utilized to his strengths

This isn't even a debate anymore.

Orlando has signed him to a year deal as a backup point guard.

What exactly is your argument? That Orlando didn't sign him as a backup point guard for a year to come off the bench for Suggs? Are you arguing with reality?

Did he play well in his first game? No.
Can Jase outplay him for minutes this season? Yes.
Will he fill in for Suggs when/if he is injured? Also Yes.

Any other argument is massive apologist AB cope. Sorry.

Tyus needs to pick it up or he won’t be playing.

It’s one game but if he doesn’t knock down at least his 3s his defense is to big of a liability.

Tyus Jones isn’t flashy.

But his game will continue to get better as the season progresses.

As a court general, he is still starting to learn how his teammates move. He’ll get there. This is just a knee jerk reaction thread.

These two plays are great reads by Tyus.

If Suggs does miss time, I think the team will survive with Tyus running the point because if he has to, he will be playing with 4 other starters who are all decent on defense. But, there is a reason why only the Magic could get him for 1 year $7 mil deal because no other team was fighting for him so he had to accept this deal. Just imagine if a year or two ago the Magic gave him a contract like he wanted back then, he would have gotten roasted here as bad as Fultz or Elf did. He could flame out here and the Magic may no worse for the better with AB and Jase.
