Anyone else find it interesting that the nba cleared rozier, but now he’s being federally indicted? Could it be because they’re (the nba) apart of it on a bigger scale. I hope they expose it all, then maybe we can finally get some fair whistles

LeBron was out (had played the previous game).

Dumb question, by why is this illegal? Are there actually laws saying it is insider information? It's not like it is a stock or anything. Is it only illegal because he said place your bets? What if he said don't bother coming to the game because lebron is out? About sell your tickets before it is announced? That's moving a market.

IDK I find it hard to care about all this that some degenerate gamblers lost money on a vice. Let them settle it in civil court versus using the FBI for this.

In short, it's wire fraud, which is a federal offense. Now to be charged with wire fraud, prosecutors need to prove all four elements: 1. plan to trick or deceive someone; 2. intent to defraud; 3. material misrepresentation or concealment; and 4. use of interstate wire communications (any electronic means that crosses state lines).

Now 2-4 are pretty obvious to prove, but 1 is where it gets hairy with sports betting, and where technology and monitoring have become so prevalent because they track bet times, history of betting, patterns, etc. to identify those anomalies that would tip off gaming commissions/FBI/etc. to investigate and prove point 1, along with other information such as personal relationships, testimony, etc.

Now the FBI has to be involved because of point 4 in that the money transfer crosses state lines, therefore making it a federal case. Similarly to if i steal someone's mail, that's a federal offense, which involves FBI. Federal jurisdiction is used for wire fraud, conspiracy, sports bribery act, etc.

Also - I am not a degenerate gambler, I just have a weird love an d infatuation for "white collar crime" lol :D

Very interesting. NBA sweeping it under the rug is not really surprising.

I've said this before, one thing the sports books need to do is eliminate "under" prop bets. But they haven't.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Windhorst pretty much saying that the league knew about it the whole time. Silver might actually be cooked here.

I'm with Marty. Damon Jones should have a lifetime NBA ban and whomever these bets were done through wants to go after him civilly, fine. But to make a literal FBI case out of this seems ridiculous.

100%. Of all the scams being run out there, constantly. To have this be the thing that locks people up is pathetic.

Just finishing a long day at work. Is there a good summary story link on what Billups is accused of doing?

Seems he's wrapped up in both the illegal poker schemes and sports betting.

Funny how some of these sports show hosts that talk gambling started noticing weird things Billups was doing well before this became a story.

Exhibit A.

I think it’s actually something of a positive sports betting is now regulated and available. It creates a much more easy to access paper trail of these dopes trying to fix games. If this **** was underground it’d be a whole lot harder to detect.

Silver aside. I think the NBA may be cooked. This would be the 2nd major credibility hit in less then 20 years. Who will ever truly trust the product again? And this time around you have angry gamblers that you may have screwed over too.

More than interesting. This is the most troubling part about the whole story to me, because it goes to the integrity or at least the competency of the league office.

NBA must be pretty happy they’ve already locked in that long term broadcast deal.
