When Lebron is back Luka will be back in the doghouse.

Luka will be unable to win anything as long as he has the self grandising goat is sabotaging the team.

Re: Luka is going to win MVP this season
At his best Luka is an average defender. Wemby at his worst is the GOAT defender of this error. Luka winning MVP over Wemby would be a travesty. Wemby gets so many more Blocks than anyone else it's just insane. He played 46 games last year and still had the most blocks by far (28). He had the most blocks in his rookie year by 50. For his career Giannis has 1065 blocks. Wemby already has 442 blocks in his career. For Wemby's career he averages 4.3 blocks a game. The all time leader in blocks per game is Hakeem with 3.09. The gap between Wemby and the next closest modern player in blocks is so wide it is insane.
Wemby had more Blocks in his rookie year than Doncic has in his entire career. A Healthy Wemby would lead the league in Blocks by such a large margin that it would be laughable. Wemby has arrived. All the scoring guards and wings that have a no real defensive impact need to take a back seat. Take the greatest seasons ever by a wing/guard. Put them up against a healthy Wemby this year.
What's the argument for taking that wing or guard over Wemby given Wemby's massive defensive impact. It's not even a question about how good Luka plays or how good SGA plays. In terms of pure value is there really any argument to be made that a guard/wing can be more valuable to a team than Wemby?

Thank you for the alley-oop. The same gap that you have in favor of Wemby on defense is the same gap guards/wings have over him playmaking wise. Doncic alone has a playoff series where he dismantled a 3-time DPOY in Rudy Gobert just off the threat of his playmaking in the floater area. And this is just Doncic who has yet to peak yet, much less talking about the all-time-greats who already finished their careers or guys who maybe ahead of Doncic like Tatum or Gilgeous-Alexander.
The Greatest of All Time debate in basketball is essentially who has the greatest basketball resume of the player who has the best highlights instead of who is the best player

Playmaking doesn't exist? Luka scored or assisted near 70 points yesterday and then you have secondary assist too. I would imagine that has some value too.

Rudy Gobert is irrelevant to the convo. Wembanyama is in a different stratosphere than those guys. I don't agree that playmaking can replace defensive value. 1) Doncic is a player that you have to hide defensively. 2) Doncic is a player that in the playoffs when asked to generate massive amounts of offense he'll get tired. Playmaking is nice and has a built in excuse - my teammates weren't making shots - when the team struggles. But ultimately this will be one of those debates that will be settled on the court. Doncic vs. Wemby. If I'm Doncic I'd be trying to win soon because this is the worst Wemby will ever look. Now that he's started to be aggressive at attacking the basket defenses will treat him differently. He's seeing it for the first time now. 2 to 3 years from now when him and his teammates have had way more reps playing this style there's no way I'm taking an offense built around a ball dominant guard with 3 guys standing around the 3-point line and rim running big over an offense built around Wemby.
Imo - Wemby generates too many easy points while also negating easy layups. Yeah Doncic has his floater but what about the other players offensive players on the floor?

Re: Luka is going to win MVP this season
He, Wemby, or Giannis will likely deserve it, but the modern NBA doesn't care. All they care about anymore is team record, which means they're going to give it to SGA again as he foul-baits his way to 20 FT's a night on the most stacked roster in the league.
I mean Jokic literally had 1 of the 5 single greatest seasons in NBA history last year — averaged a 30-point Triple-Double on an insane 67% TS%, shot an elite 43% from 3, became the first player in NBA history to finish top-3 in FOUR different major statistical categories (!!), and drug that garbage Nuggets roster to 50 Wins — and they still gave it to SGA because of team record and ignored the fact that he plays on a ridiculously stacked team.. lol. Luka doesn't stand a chance tbh.

I'm honestly curious. You had to choose between this version of Wemby or Luka Doncic at 21. Who are you taking?

Re: Luka is going to win MVP this season
The advantage that Luka had over Gobert wasn't just that Gobert couldn't guard him in one-on-one situations but that Gobert was a non-entity on offense. Prime Wemby will be the closest thing to Shaq. A must foul. But he can make free throws. When Luka plays Wemby what happens when Wemby gets Luka's rim runner into foul trouble? What happens when the Lakers have to help to stop Wemby and now Luka is forced to rotate? Last year Luka and the Lakers lost to the Timberwolves with - let me check my notes Rudy Gobert - in 4-1 lol. "Bbbbut Luka played well." Well, we evaluate Wemby on Championships. If he doesn't end up with more Ships than Luka when it's all said and done I will have considered his career a failure.

Luka had absolutely insane season as well in 23/24, dragged that hobbled and discombobulated roster to the playoffs and then finals. Averaged 37ppg triple double for 2 straight months and broke many records in the process. He was "only" 3rd in MVP voting due to team record. So i don't understand why would a team record only go against Luka and not other players? Because that's what i'm getting when i'm reading through all these comments.

I thought people learned by now that last season was a huge outlier compared to other seasons. Check last night game vs Wolves, it's a huge difference in his play between then and now lol.... If Wemby outplays Luka and wins it won't have anything to do how Lakers played in that 1st round vs Wolves. Not even exactly the same team.

Things will change for Luka once Lebron returns.
I have SGA, Jokic, or Giannis.

Let's see...
1. How Luka and LeBron do when both share the court
2. How Luka does in the H2H vs the other contenders
At the end of the day, Doncic has already led his team to the Finals and WCF. And, unlike OKC, no one was expecting the Mavs to make it that far.
If his numbers are there, he can be MVP for sure.

He's going to have to for the Lakers to have any shot. That roster is an embarrassment.

Also, as others have stated, team record should only help or hurt your case a number of times.
23/24 Luka was the clear 2nd, and a very close one (I wouldn't been mad if he won) but SGA was #2 because of team record.
Shai won last year vs the best RS in the last 10 years because of team record. I didn't get mad, either.
But this season I feel it's time to even the playing field.

It depends on narrative. Remember when Westbrook won MVP cause he averaged triple double despite being on week seed. We will see what narrative voters will buy come voting time.

Re: Luka is going to win MVP this season
People are focusing on team record but that's less important than the team overachieving. I think ESPN had the Lakers over/under at 48 wins, so if Luka can carry the Lakers with gaudy numbers to 54-55 wins, he'd have a great chance. I don't think he needs the most wins, just enough wins + overachieving.
Of course, Shai, Jokic and Giannis will be there too. Just like last year, it'll likely come down to personal preference and what stats you value. Statistically all of them will be dominant. The one thing Luka has on the other 3 is he's never won before, so he's the only 1 of the 4 who won't have voter fatigue working against him.
