That's why I figured it was better to go with weekly lineups instead of daily lineups so one team that subs every day and is deep doesn't end up with way more games played than the other team.
I see both sides of it.
I do like the more active GM’s being rewarded for being active. Everyone has the same opportunity to set lineups, hell you can even do it weeks in advance!
I do too, but it also penalizes rebuidling teams, forcing them to play their rooks and development guys, who usually they would leave on the bench. It's really no different than someone getting as many games as they could sub in for the roto season, so the stacked teams, who already have an advantage, just have more of one.
But if people want to leave it for daily switching that's fine.
We actually don't want to advantage constant waiver watching. Ultra competitive leagues that reward constant activity rarely last because not many people actually have that much free time to devote to their phone. People eventually get tired of staying up till the deadlines, phone watching, scouting, watching all the fantasy wrap up shows, etc. and they just stop participating in the league.
3 adds per week with only 9 starters and 6 bench was the best way to deal with not having a weekly games cap and not rewarding people for being glued to their phones. Having more players on the bench increases the potential games played for both teams which reduces variance slightly - this is the only other option we had afforded to us since yahoo doesn't have a games cap. Another way of approaching it is that depth actually matters but to an appropriate degree! Those guys on your bench can help - BUT its not like other leagues that have a billion starting spots - your bench guys won't play on days where your best starters do.
What this also means is that this allows you to stash rookies who might not get playing time early in their career but still get some value out of them because you can throw them in your starting lineups on a day where maybe all your best guys aren't playing. (as a side note this feature combined with the increased number of keepers dramatically increases the value of young but minutes-restricted players...do a thought experiment in your head with rookies like Maluach, Fears, Demin, Coward, etc and compare their hypothetical value if we still had last years format/keepers compared to this year...its quite a bit more).
So that's ultimately where a lot of the settings philosophy comes from. I'm making the most of what yahoo has to offer while keeping the league competitive but balancing that with accessibility. I know you're probably sick of me mentioning him but I believe this kind of philosophy and the settings I chose is very in-line with what Josh Lloyd of locked on fantasy basketball preaches. Also as a result of that you can use his show to get fantasy advice and improve your dynasty team - he's the best in the business.
Which leads me to my next point which is that I see some suggestions here and while I'm not going to say they're wrong, I don't think they vibe with like what the actual long term vision that has kept the league afloat for 10 years or they just create different problems elsewhere that we don't want to deal with. We had a super successful 9 year run with roto settings and since the h2h setting change was voted in we're going to continue that same successful style but with h2h.
Ultimately it's about finding a balance of "let's not reward people for having too much spare time/living in certain time zones" and allowing some level of skill expression.
But if I'm being honest I don't think streaming is like THAT skillful anyway (yeah, I can debate on this if you want lol).
Also if you're worried about rebuilding teams taking Ls...it's dynasty format. If they're up against a contender of course they're going to lose - their entire roster is full of developing prospects. The balance comes from giving them better tools to rebuild with and we did that this off-season. Parity comes from the h2h weekly matchups during playoffs - seeds 1 through 8 have a chance to win because the randomness is increased in h2h.
A Ghost of Kleine-level post if I've ever done one, but that's sort of a window into the decision making process so if you're wondering "why x not y" then this should shed some light on that. And I really dig dynasty leagues because they're the best format (imo) and learning fantasy basketball over the last few years has changed how I think about not only fantasy basketball but also basketball in general and (lol) even the rest of the world.
