Trae v Ja

Post#1 » by NYG » Sun Nov 2, 2025 6:30 pm

Given Trae is expiring and about to get paid vs. Morant's issues on and off the court, but he's locked into a smaller deal. Who has more trade value, Ja or Trae? How many unprotected first round picks would make up the difference?

I think the threshold issue for a team is whether they're willing to trade for either guy. I suspect Trae has a bigger market for the simple fact he's on an expiring contract. The Hawks may not trade him for a rental offer, but you're not signing up for a multi-year max come what may. It's easier for a trade partner to pull the trigger on Trae.

I don't think this is a reasonable framework, their values may not be the same for different teams so you can't make a straight up comparison. To be fair both are polarizing stars that need accomodating, Trae is expiring so you need his consent and his value depends a lot on that, while Ja is signed long term but is problematic and injury prone. It's difficult to compare, the most I'd say is that I wouldn't break the bank for any of them, 2 picks plus one or two reasonably good young players and expiring filler is probably where I'd draw the line for both, give or take.

Trae's not expiring though. He may not pick up his option for next season, but there are plenty of scenarios in which he might.

For practical purposes he is, you're still depending on his consent, which is the key here: any team trading for him needs his blessing or they aren't guaranteed to keep him beyond this season.

According to my other thread... Monk/DeRozan + 1 1st = Ja
According to this thread... Ja + 1 1st = Trae
So that means... Monk/DeRozan + 2 1sts = Trae

Atlanta Hawks get:
Malik Monk
DeMar DeRozan
Earliest of 2026 Grizzlies / (Lower of Suns/Wizards) / Magic First Round Draft Pick
2031 Unprotected Minnesota Timberwolves First Round Draft Pick

Memphis Grizzlies get:
Trae Young

Sacramento Kings get:
Ja Morant

Hawks get some veterans to help their current roster while adding more picks to keep building around their young core.

The Grizzlies decide to pay Trae to avoid the Ja Morant problem. Trae/JJJ could actually be a nice tandem, too.

Kings keep all of their own 1sts to take a flier on Ja Morant and see if can be a star they couldn't otherwise obtain.

No chance we give up a likely high lottery pick for a expiring guy who is out at least another month.

if I need a franchise PG, Trae is both a vastly better player and more reliable.
