I see your point that they should spend a fair bit more. That being said there still is a budget though -- say they increase their payroll by 15% that will us about $75m to spend.

Back in late September I did an analysis as follows:
- Jays are shedding about $75M of salaries this offsesason.
- That being said they are adding $40M in salaries to their current roster (raises in arb, jumps in contract such as Vlad, staggered salaries like Santander and Hoffman)
- So the net of the above is $35M

I also figured due to the success of the season they would increase payroll by at least $20 million, giving us $55M to spend on players this offseason.

That being said with the success of this season I can see them going up by $40 million (about 15%). That gives us $75M to spend, be it on Bo, Bieber, outside,

Add to that the additional 12 million or so by declining the arbitration on stiffs like Little and Varsho, and letting these two bums walk. Jays will have a good amount of money to spend this off-season to potentially be a very good team again for 2026.

Little is not arbitration eligible. He is a minimum player -- so whether its him or someone else in his spot that is a wash. But I think now that he has been "figured" out in terms of how he works currently., he is going to have a tough climb back.

As for Varsho, they are not declining his arbitration. At $10-$12M it is a perfectly fine deal.

There is a large middle ground between Randle's "He is our Team MVP". and Mehar's "He is a stiff, let's boot him out". And that middle ground is his next contract at around $12M or so. That's perfectly reasonable for what he brings. Or you offer him arbitration and trade him - you will get some value back.

The jays would be insanely stupid to decline Varshos arbitration lmfao like even if we got one of the FA OFs (Cody, Tucker, Bader) it would be to add to lineup and replace the Lukes spot. We are probably gonna go for it and having a cheap 3.5-4.0ish fWar player who came off a .833 OPS season while being still one of the best defensive players in the sport is extremely valuable. I think his arm will be better next year as well. Plus we have Satandar in RF so having an elite defender seems like a must.

Bieber has that very odd clause in his player option that allows him to get paid $4M if he exercises his player opt out. Perhaps its related to that. Other players (and their teams) don't have that similar clause.

I suspect the Jays have asked his representatives to have an initial chat regarding an extension, before he formally exercises his player option and the $4M payment this year. It gives Toronto an opportunity to defer that $4m expense until later in his next contract, and we knows Rogers finance would want to defer the expense.

0 chance they non-tender Varsho. The question will be whether they look to extend him, ride him out one more year or move him for something else. He has been injury prone the last couple of years and his playoff performance did him no favours. I think the chances of extension are low but if there is one, it'll be a 2-3 year deal.

Losing Bieber would actually be a big loss.

Bring him back!

The fact that he had an ERA of 3.5 after coming back from TJ tells me he's gonna be an even better pitcher next year.

Cy Young candidate when healthy.

Really hope he comes back.

Gaus
Bieber
Yesavage

is a good start to the rotation

Add two more arms (at the very least one, and hope Berrios returns to form)

Need to make a bold trade for an ELITE arm (if FA route doesn't pan out)

Target #1: Skubal
Target #2 (more realistic): Joe Ryan

We should keep Bo for Vlads sake as well.Vlad slid hard after Teo left, who was his protection, and each others hitting mentors when we scored 10 runs often.Vlad looks like he has turned a corner with his own ability to correct a slump on his own, sort of like how Bo is his own HC,plus Popkins already being there for both of them is a bonus.Play Bo at 2nd.Bo has said more than once,he wants to stay.Giminez can be the starting SS,and our defence would be better that way.Bo,s 3 run HR is the last thing i choose to remember from this years WS

Looking forward to Lazaro Estrada getting more run next season. Really liked his command and composure on the mound. He could be a better replacement to Domingues

Am I crazy, or did Eric Lauer not prove to be a really good starter? Bring back Bieber and have a #6 guy ready to go if Berrios's arm drops off.

Lauer absolutely deserves to be a starter next year. Berrios is #5, maybe Bassitt for #6 if he comes back on a cheap contract. If Bieber is gone, maybe Frander Valdez?

When Max signed with Toronto I had a feeling we would enjoy the experience. Never could I have imagined just how special this season would turn out to be. Out of 18 seasons in MLB none has had an impact on our lives quite like this one.

Toronto, our family fell in love with your beauty, culture and people. Playing for an entire country is truly special.

Normally at the end of a season, regardless of the outcome, you’re ready to go home and recharge. Never have I seen a team full of players and their families that did not want the season to end and wished they could play for many more weeks, just to get more time together.

I feel incredibly blessed to still live this beautiful baseball life and to watch Max live out his dream. I’m devastated the season is over, proud for what this team accomplished, and grateful for the experiences and lifelong friendships that came from it.

Huge news. I thought he might try to take the $4 million payout and then look for a bigger one year deal.

Thats pretty awesome, Bieber getting a full offseason recovery from TMJ i think he could easily be our 2-3 guy with a high ceiling. Even if hes just like this year and puts up a 3.50-3.80 ERA in 170 innings thats still solid for us.
