Jays have the best defense?
I found this to be a bit surprising. They do have the best outfield defense, with a healthy Johnson.

I saw a detailed report last winter that also had us ranked with the best OF defense in baseball. It basically said that with Reed out in LF, we were playing 3 CF's at the same time.
And the infield D should be improved this year, especially with JMac available as a late inning D replacement.
Of course Lind is a huge negative when he plays in LF for RJ and Zaun can't throw anybody out to save his life.

Hill is average
Zaun is below average
I honestly havn't seen enough Eckstein to say anything concrete but I would put him between Hill and Zaun. It's a good defensive team but we're weak at an important position which is Catcher.

V-Dubs a GOld Glover
Rios a Cannon potential CF with potential GG but VDubs has that
Johnson great arm and speed potential CF with some GG chance but again Vdubs if not Rios :>
McD and Hill are wicked 1-2 punch. Rolen and Overbay.. cant doubt the D they bring. We need a catcher who can HIT and play D that improves the team A HOLE LOT.

When they play Johnson in LF and McDonald at SS, then I'd say they easily have the best defense in baseball. Of course, Eckstein is the starting SS and Stairs figures to get time in LF against RHP, so there will be some weak spots, but overall I'd say the Jays will be one of (if not the) top defensive teams in the league next year.
Rolen really helps a lot because he can cover a bit of ground for Eckstein. If Rolen and McDonald play together, then teams will have a tough time getting the ball past the infield if it's hit on the ground. Johnson-Wells-Rios is a fantastic defensive outfield. Speed, range, and strong arms....can't really ask for much more from your outfielders. The only real weak spot is Zaun's arm.

Generally speaking, when you surround a poor defensive player with a bunch of really good ones, doesn't that actually help cover up his short comings and/or make them easier to live with?

Unless Aaron Hill is really Dhalsim, he's not going to help Zaun a whole lot with the throw to second.
