I'm confused.

Weren't you just telling posters it's okay for young players to sit and watch?

It is okay. I never said it wasn't.

I’ve been watching some highlights recently, and I’m amazed by how many basketball decisions happen on the fly — when multiple players make the right choices based on the situation. But most importantly, I think communication is probably the most underrated part of defense. Guys like Draymond Green or KG, who can naturally bark out commands while anchoring the defense, have been successful in part because of their communication skills.

Now, back to Joan — I think his English is currently one of the things limiting him. Hopefully, Rudy’s presence can help him with that.

Interesting. That could be a factor.

Right now he’s all bark - no bite - yet.

In other words, Joan is currently playing purely on instinct and isn’t yet a part of the system. Sometimes that leads to wow moments, but a system is when multiple players work together so that in 10 similar possessions, the team can expect the same outcome in 8–9 of them.

With Rudy, for example, it was the drop coverage + point-of-attack defense from NAW and Jaden. In Miami’s case with Bam, it’s the zone defense. Joan also needs at least one defensive pairing like that in order to become a true system player.

You can already see how it works on offense in his connection with Ingles — even a hundred-year-old Joe is throwing no-look passes to Beringer like it’s nothing.

I don't think so. Duren is so much bigger and was a monster on the glass form Day 1. I also think Joan has much better defensive instincts.

I think Mitch Robinson is probably closer for now.

I honestly see a lot of early Giannis in Joan. What if he develops like the Greek Freak.

The only flaw in that comparison is a big one - ballhandling. Giannis had that from a young age and in lower levels, and his ability to be a point forward is a big part of what makes him the offensive threat he is. Joan has never shown glimpses of ballhandling to that level.

I understand that, but he's just starting to learn basketball. He's very coordinated and could develop ball handling skills.

Sure. And he could develop a jumper like Steph Curry.

The sky is the limit.

The sky is the limit. I don't think it's unreasonable to think he can develop ball handling skills and a decent jumper. I'm not saying he's going to be the French Freak, but he has a body type and fluidity that reminds me of Giannis.
