Because I don't recall anyone having such a bad start as Dumars with the Pelicans after trading two possible top-5 picks in the 2026 draft!(their own and the one of the pacers)

The hiring process of NBA GMs is mind boggling, the person could have a terrible track record, and still get hired againg, because he has "experience".
Anyone who followed Dumars and Weaver work in Detroit should have expected this, the damage was already done at the hiring.
There is a conspiracy theory that Dumars is a company man sent by the NBA to destroy the Pelicans from within to relocate the franchise to Seattle/Vegas, this is a more plausible theory than hiring these 2 on merit.

I seriously wonder sometimes how much better these "basketball guys" would be than some ESPN/sports junkie who works as a financial analyst or some kinda lawyer who's involved in tax work. I'm talking guys not over 35 years old, not yet into the management ranks even. Like...would they really be any worse?
They have the skills to figure out the cap stuff. They can do the math. Maybe they suck negotiating? Maybe players won't respect them? But I dunno man...how much worse would they be?

He should have been fired on draft night. I'm 100% certain you could take a random poster from here and they would do a better job as GM than Dumars

I mean, if one of us had become GM and had done absolutely nothing since that day until today, not even picked up a pencil, the Pelicans' future would look brighter today.

You need strong personalities capable of negotiating and making tough decisions, they also needs to.command respect from the players, whonaren't your average man, it's a rare skill.

You deservedly can knock the process (it hasn't been good), but both Fears and Queen have flashed all-star potential. If they reach their potential it's a win.

Does a GM really need that though? The coach needs it. But the GM is mostly there to wheel and deal and build the team. I get that you need to get them to sign so I see why you need some of that. But still...

People who want him fired must not believe that you learn from mistakes. Because if you do believe that, then no one in the world knows more about NBA GMing than Joe Dumars.

No chance. Gayle Benson is just as inept an owner as Dumars is as GM. She went through the GM search and ended up with Dumars as the pick. She thinks he’s a good GM and probably doesnt even know / understand how bad his trades have been.

Think of Masai who had meetings with DDR and Lowrey to motivate them, Mike Dunleavy who had to reject Klay and take the heat of doing wrong to franchise legend, etc...

That's not plausible at all. It's not that complicated and it happens all the time, with coaches too. Having friends in the league, being well-liked, being known as easy to work with, having good relationships with other front office personnel across the league, your name...these things matter just like they do in other fields. We think about things purely in terms of basketball, but we forget that at the end of the day it's a job.

It's a fair point, they are in a high profile role and need some balls and thick skin. I just also see so many bad deals. And like an analyist or a lawyer would know to drop Klay easy as heck there. Would they be able to take the heat? That's tougher.

Pelicans tickets are available for 4$ a ticket, Dumars may be well liked, not enough to cost his employer millions.

Re: Do you think Joe Dumars could be fired after only a few months at this job?
My personal opinion is that GM's don't want to trade with him similar to the Ainge rule. This was obviously a deal he took to reset the narrative on himself to get back to par in the modern NBA landscape. People forget he was a excellent GM early in his career, better than even a Prime Masai. He fleeced some teams back in the day. That 2004 Detroit team was built on scraps no one else wanted.
"Ah ok dude will now give up lotto picks and is more reasonable, i'll pick up the phone." It might be a case of that or he has just aged out of the NBA landscape fully. He might be trying to trick people into thinking he is a Billy Knight level GM now when that was his plan all along to nab some pieces in the future when he is ready to "really deal". This is the only way I can justify what he is doing.
