My favorite book of all time.

If we were at a literary bar, I could buy a round and talk about how its the greatest book for understanding America ever written.

Moby Dick is also incredible in that sense, and contextually maybe more impressive since it was written basically at the same time as the events of Blood Meridian. I agree with you ultimately but also would recommend Melville to anyone walking that [lonesome] path.

Moby Dick was so amazingly predictive of how Americans would come together from different ethnicities and backgrounds to master commerce. Throw in that the mixed crew is literally harvesting finite creatures, and the metaphor (of a new movement that exists to manifest destiny, colonize, extract, profit, etc is so profound. Add in the chapter in the chapel, and how protestant perspectives became catalysts (for good and for bad) in this new world power… and it can feel like Melville wrote in 1920 looking backwards.

HBO’s Deadwood I think was chasing some of this vibe/esthetic/theme/tone albeit at a different era.

I liked it a lot. One of the entertainment podcasts I listen to called it their favorite show of the year (they've watched ahead).

Watched the second. Really liked it.

It wrapped up this week. I liked it. Created by Sterlin Harjo. Good cast, Ethan Hawke, Keith David, Tim Blake Nelson, Paul Sparks, Kyle MacLachlan, Killer Mike, Peter Dinklage.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Ringer is doing a Buffy rewatch/retrospective so I'm joining in, just jumping around to the top 40 or so episodes in the Buffyverse. I liked all of Angel and Buffy but most is closer to good than special. But the top 20% or so is just some of the best genre TV there is. I still think Angel has the best series finale this century.

You probably already know, but there’s a pretty good graphic novel series of Angel called After The Fall that’s basically just Whedon’s planned next season of the show as a comic book. Pretty enjoyable read for fans, much better than a usual adaption.

For fans of Blood Meridian, I once stumbled across a guy named Ben Nichols, a semi famous Towns Van Zandt style songwriter. He loved Blood Meridian so much, he wrote an entire album based on it “Last Pale Light in the West.” Its actually good, if you like songs based on ultra violent novels about the devil marauding through Mexico.

On a final note, I was doing some reading on McCarthy… and surprised to learn a lot of the story (Blanton’s gang, etc) was actually true and McCarthy had come across one of the gang’s journals as the creative spark/idea. Also they went through his house (Cormac) and he had over 20,000 personally annotated books. Did you hear that wife? I need more books.

I tried to give Blood Meridian a shot about a year ago but I just couldn't with the lack of punctuation.

I'd argue Amy's Story.... But, I'd listen to your argument

I don't really do horror books but I did give the first Dark Tower book a go and that was not for me at all lol. Legitimately struggled to finish it. When Mike Flanagan gives that adaptation a try, I'll definitely watch because Flanagan can basically do no wrong in my eyes The Gunslinger was a huge slog to me.

Agree again. The Gunslinger is not his best work, however, the series is awesome (if a little silly at times). I had the exact same experience in about 1987 with the book. Could barely finish it. Read it again maybe 20 years ago and had the same problem. Then I read the second book and the third, etc. Loved the series. I'd highly recommend trying it. It's not horror at all, it's fantasy.

Hmmm, I'll think about it. I am very close to wrapping up my current book and it's currently the last book in the series so I will be on the hunt for a new one to read.

It's like 4,000 pages total, just fyi.

Yeah, my preference is to find series like this where I know I'll have plenty to read for awhile so that sounds fine to me as long as I actually like it lol

Love The Dark Tower. It's a shame that it starts with probably the worst of the series, although it's pretty short.

Mrs. Finn absolutely LOVES it & keeps hounding me to read it but it's not really my cup of tea.

It's among the weirdest things I've ever read.

Spoiler:
King is a character. He gets hit by a minivan.

Watched the first episode of Vince Gilligan's new show Pluribus. It's certainly different. I'll keep watching.

My brother saw predator badlands in 4DX (extra lights, chair move and scents and steam). Says it was the coolest theater experience he's had. Closest is Gurnee mills :x

Watched both and it's definitely intriguing. Good to have Rhea Seehorn back on my screen.

Gilligan wrote the part specifically for her.

Loved Pluribus. What a genius idea for a show.
