Damn that's devastating. Rich or not losing your home and everything in it, damn.

Clav wrote:It was called in at 4:36 in the morning, no one was home. Other neighbors may not have noticed if they were inside, or also, not home. Obviously, if someone broke in and used an accelerant, then yeah, it would ignite quickly. I will lean towards something innocuous like a faulty circuit that caught something else on fire etc, but I'm really curious what they find. There was a swimming pool and ocean water nearby as well.

I'd like to mention that I've worked in fire response (wildfire) before, and if a FD gets a call, the crew is usually on the scene with enough time to save parts of the structure, at least some parts of it [especially a house of this size]. I feel for Spo n fam because there's a lot in the house that is not recoverable, and memories in those items are gone forever. It's a weird feeling getting a new place to live with a bunch of random things that aren't yours, but they are now, and there's nothing from before the fire to decorate your place or spice up a room. Life takes a lot of time and a hungry flame takes hours to be satiated.

Called in at 4:36.

His flight with the team arrived at 5:10am and he was home soon after to see his house in flames.

Given how messy his divorce was… the timing sounds eery.

Will be surprised if there is no foul play. Like someone said a house like this normally gets saved or some of it. This isn’t California wildfires.

Devastating. Hope everyone is ok as in no one got physically hurt. Obviously they're not ok otherwise. Weird timing and that no other houses went down but we have to wait until the forensics are done.

Is it me or are there weird juju vibes accruing and swirling around the NBA this season? Hinky.

This sucks. But almost not news worthy. He’s worth tens of millions of dollars. He’s fine. Not trying to be a d***. But he will have a hotel. His insurance will cover everything. His kids will continue their private school education. Etc, etc.

The scary thing would be if this is part of the what seems to be a hidden story… sports athletes getting their homes broken into. And if the burglars have moved onto burning the home down. If that is true it is a big story. Because someone is going to die. And clearly it’s a multi state national crime syndicate doing these robberies and they are accelerating their tactics. I hope that’s not the case. That’s scary.

Feel bad for Spo even if I seem like I am shrugging it off. Sure he lost things that matter to him. Cool dude.

Glad to hear he and everyone else are OK/safe.
Of course money-wise insurance will cover up everything, but you've got memories, kids stuff, documents - it sucks.

Now, it's a weird thing to happen to the Heat coach - if I'm coaching OKC Thunder, I'm starting to worry

The first thing I wondered is whether or not Spoelstra has a dog. People claim cats are the bad ones. But, it's always the dogs who are getting themselves (and you) into trouble.

I work closely in public safety and have projects with a regional landfill and the amount of lithium-ion fires there these days is insane. The landfill has to put out multiple fires DAILY that are caused by batteries left in small devices and then thrown out instead of disposed of properly. They literally had to buy their own fire truck to help deal with these issues and contain risk more quickly because there are so many products that have small lithium batteries in them now that people don't think twice about simply tossing in the garbage.

Hate to be cynical but definitely worth looking into

Agreed. It's rare (but possible) that a fire of that magnitude starts on its own. Definitely worth looking into.

Arson is rare, not the other way around. Fire can spread really quickly and it's not uncommon for a small fire to burn down a house if it's not contained immediately

I don't understand how houses can't be built better there so they are not total losses. There's a century worth of advancement in building codes in most places so this doesn't happen.

Home fire escape time was 17 minutes,
but now it is just 2 minutes due to the chemical gasses which knock a person unconscious
to be left to burn inside the fire

Electric vehicles such as teslas emit these chemicals and electric vehicles repeatedly restart themselves on fire.

For example Los Angeles has the most Teslas in America. But when these vehicles catch fire they require specialized hazmat teams to put out the fire, and require many more firefighters to do so.

And after the fires burn the real estate is poisoned with the chemicals from the electric vehicles which coat the real estate with cancer causing chemicals.

There simply are not enough hazmat electric vehicle teams of firefighters to put out many simultaneous electric vehicle fires, so instead the firefighters are forced to allow some fires to burn. And the electric vehicles repeatedly restart themselves on fire.

It wasn't just JJ reddick, it was several lakers players and coaching staff.

edit: and probably clippers too

It wasn’t just pro athletes and their coaches, lot of regular folks lost their homes in that fire too.

I take all my batteries - lithium or not - and put them in a clear plastic bag and drop them off at a nearby Staples. For doing so, they give you a $10 coupon off a $30 purchase. The coupon can only be used in store though. Not online.

I read the house had just finished a year-long renovation. Also it apparently is hard to access due to a wall or something so firefighters couldn't just spread out and tackle the fire.
