LaVine is one of the most talented, athletic, smooth, quick, fast and efficient guards you can have...but...
He is low IQ, does not consistently play defense and most of all...he does not win.
Cant you kind of say the same thing about Sabonis though? He can give you 19/12/5 on 65 TS% and on a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio.
But he doesnt consistently play defense/is just physically limited defensively and most of all... he doesnt win. Just like LaVine, Sabonis has never been on a team that has won a playoff series.
Neither guy is good enough to turn a bad team into a good one. So I guess the next question is, who is best to maybe help a good roster?
The 6'5 SG who can give me 25/5/4 on 60+ TS% and not dominate the ball as he does that. And on the other end, if I have a good roster, I can just hide him on the opposing team's worst perimeter player.
Or the 6'10 guy who cant defend the 4, but also struggles to defend at the 5 because he's a below the rim 6'10 guy with a 6'10 wingspan.
I think Sabonis can help improve a playoff team if he was the backup big coming off the bench for 20 mpg. I think he would be a huge weapon in that role. While I think LaVine can help improve a playoff team as a starter and #2 option. Because it's much easier to hide the 6'5 SG on defense, than it is the not that mobile 6'10 guy. And again LaVine's ability to score at such a volume and at such efficiency, without having to dominate the ball is a pretty damn good skill set to have, and pretty easy to plug and play into any team.
