Who wants AD/ Who wants Kyrie - is in-season trade possible?
Assuming Dallas shifts its focus to building a team around Flagg after firing Nico, both Kyrie and Davis should be on the block. The question is: who should be calling, and what should the price be?
I don’t know if there will be many buyers who actually have something to offer. Both of those guys are suited to be your second option, and teams that are in win-now mode and already have their number one tend to be pretty strapped for assets. Franchises that would love to roll the dice for one more push, like Milwaukee or Phoenix, really don’t have anything meaningful to send back.
For Kyrie, I could see Detroit or Houston making a move. Detroit needs more offense, and something like Harris + Ivey + picks is a package I could imagine them offering - but that’s not exactly exciting for the Mavericks.
Houston would love to add some lead guard shot creation, and they could build a package around VanVleet’s contract + assets. I just can’t imagine KD being thrilled about that reunion.
AD is a tougher case. Maybe the Clippers or Warriors roll the dice here (though both have almost nothing worthwhile to send back). My Spurs could send assets for AD to pair him with Wemby, even though I personally hate the idea.
Overall, I just don’t see the Mavs getting a good enough offer to justify moving either guy. I think both end up staying in Dallas, with any potential move pushed to the offseason.

Re: Who wants AD/ Who wants Kyrie - is in-season trade possible?
Like I said on the TnT board, I think Spurs are a good spot for AD, depending on the asking price. I feel like given his age/injury concerns/decline, his value should be at an all time low. Spurs can offer a good young player (Castle), matching salary (Vassell/Olynyk) and picks, they also own the Mavs 2030 unprotected swap that they can return. I am very skeptical of AD but I think he is a natural fit next to someone like Victor. They would be an insane defensive pairing
Kyrie is harder to gauge because we don't know how he's going to look returning from injury. Wolves desperately need an upgrade at PG, Houston could use him also but I believe they are hard capped.

I see the point about the AD + Wemby pairing, but in the end I don’t think we’d be able to come to an agreement with the Mavs. I don’t see our front office parting with any of Fox/Castle/Harper just yet, and if Castle isn’t involved I can’t see Dallas accepting a deal where Vassell/Johnson are the main pieces we’re attaching draft compensation to.
If I’m wrong and Wright decides to go all-in, I think we’ll come to regret it. The best defensive pairing is the one that actually stays on the court.

Re: Who wants AD/ Who wants Kyrie - is in-season trade possible?
this is a tough one. It could be dangerous to trade AD to a team that feels like hes the missing piece for them. Imagine the Lakers continue rolling and end up being a real contender, and then a team you give AD to (lets say the Spurs for instance) looks like a force... now the chances that a team will win a title because of a trade you made will double. If AD does end up coming back from injury and having a an All NBA season, the fans are gonna get mad all over again.
Also, as a Laker fan I cant believe I'm saying this, but people might be panicking a liiiiiittle too early here. I get that the start to the season has been an abject disaster for the Mavs but its still that... the START of the season. We're 11 games into the season and they're 5 games below .500. The Lakers started the 22-23 season 2-10. They ended up making the WCF. I dont think you can just walk away from a player like AD without at least knowing what youve got, and thats gonna take more than the handful of games he's played to this point.
Kyrie is a whole other situation, but hes also gonna be hard to move anyway so theyre probably gonna need to keep the team together.

Who is 34 years old (come the playoffs) Kyrie after ACL?
Clippers Baron Davis? Pistons Iverson? Last legs Middleton?
Most people say like he is 32 years old Kyrie who was instrumental in the 2024 run but apparently he is not.
I wouldn't trust Kyrie in 2026 playoffs to be honest. More realisticly he will not have restrictions only in 2027 playoffs at the age 35 season.

Once Kyrie comes back he will generate more interest provided he does not look like a shade of himself. His contract is easier to absorb and his game does not depend on athletic ability all that much. He is easier to plug in on the fly too - especially if you have a decent defender in your backcourt.
I think it will be easier for Mavs FO to accept modest compensation for Kyrie - AD compensation will be weighted against Luka so there's a lot more pressure to get something good in return.

The issue here is that for the reasons you mentioned (and more) Kyrie doesnt have positive trade value. he's got 2 years left on his contract after this season, at $40M a season. What team is signing up for that without the Mavs sweetening the pot? At that point you have to ask whether its worth it to give up extra assets in order to move him, or if its just better to keep him and hope he can surprise people when he gets back from injury.

Teams that could use a versatile big (and have some ability to get one):
Spurs, Grizzlies, Heat, Bulls, Celtics, Pacers
Teams that could use a ball handling spacer:
Pistons, Rockets, Wolves, Heat
I like the Spurs chasing AD.
I'm not sure what to make of Kyrie. He's out with an ACL. He's 33. He's on the books for 2 seasons after this but the contract could be worse (42m player option in 2028 at age 35). If he was ready to go this season, I could see Houston chasing him, though I'm not sure what the KD/Kyrie relationship is like after Brooklyn.

Vs. Wemby + AD, teams might be better off offensively, deploying five 6'1 from the rec league, who are exceptionally skilled at making long range 3's out to the logo, and just pass the ball around between them, till one gets a semi clean lookBornstellar wrote:Like I said on the TnT board, I think Spurs are a good spot for AD, depending on the asking price. Nobody will bid for max type players who can’t stay healthy. The CBA doesn’t allow that type of risk anymore. I can see a team trying to arrange the chairs in a titanic situation. Say Clippers. Or New Orleans. But other than that, they can’t trade AD let along Kyrie. It is done

Does not matter, as Mavs are not winning a title as currently constructed - it's more beneficial to get some assets in the bank, even if it leads to their trade partner having a look at the title.
Would love to get Mavs fan opinion on this but i can't imagine them being mad at something like 2frps+prospect+salary filler no matter how well AD does for the other team.

in a vacuum that may be true but lets not forget the elephant in the room here... the REAL reason Nico was fired. Fans are pissed off at this franchise in a way they (stupidly) did not anticipate. I'm not sure that fans are going to see it the same way as a cold calculating FO would if you trade your generational talent for an all nba player, and then you trade away that all nba player half a season later... and both of those players are thriving in their new situations because of you. its a pretty tricky situation to navigate

I can def see the Bulls talking themselves into trading for AD.
Kyrie could be on the move to HOU or ORL.

Olynyk is expiring. The Spurs are doing the Mavericks a favor by taking on AD’s salary. If they want draft picks then they can seek life elsewhere.

Kyrie makes so much sense for Houston and especially if he's willing to waive his player option in 27-28 to play with KD again and contend.

Kyrie has no value until he returns, so he won't be traded, and AD, I don't think they'll trade just yet because it makes them look like even bigger idiots than they already do for trading Luka for him.

I could see that too but they don't really have an offer that would make much sense, I doubt they move MAtas or Giddey and who wants anything else. Coby White/Ayo have some value but not anything close to AD. Picks... yeah they could but the timeline for this team doesn't make a lot of sense. I don't put much past AD.

Nobody is offering the Mavs exciting packages for AD or Kyrie, they have little to no leverage. Those 2 are old and injury prone, they're very high risk at their age. Mavs are going to have to take back middling assets and some salary relief. I'd be astonished if any team offers them more than that.

Klay Thompson is the guy that needs to be traded before the deadline. The exception is if he is willing to sign longterm at a team friendly deal and settle for a bench role. Highly unlikely!
