Question for the cap/apron experts. What if the FO felt we were really close this year and decided to get one player to put us over the top, but went over the second apron to do it. What happens then?

And do you have to tear down like Boston to get back under? Or can you reset more gradually without becoming an also ran?

Wonder if we can get pj Washington from Dallas if they tear it down . Perfect player we need for a 3/4 depth piece

I don't think Sixers would help get him to the Knicks who are a rival

looking around the league to see who needs a legitimate starting shooting guard where Grimes makes sense

If we wait to go over next year .. Then we can ride out contracts to get back under before we get penalized.

As for going over this year...I don't know the specifics but, we are up against the second apron so, money has to be similar in trades IIRC. That's above my pay grade for how we could go over the second apron this year.

Restrictions for second apron teams
Spoiler:
No mid-level exception: Teams cannot use any part of the taxpayer mid-level exception for free agents.
No salary aggregation: Teams cannot combine the salaries of multiple players to match a higher salary from another team in a trade. Cannot take in a higher salary in a trade.
No cash in trades: Teams cannot include cash in trades to help complete a deal.
No use of prior trade exceptions: Teams cannot use trade exceptions generated in previous seasons.
No trading of future first-round picks: Teams cannot trade away their first-round pick seven years into the future.
Harsher penalties for repeated offense: If a team remains over the second apron for three out of five seasons, their first-round pick seven years out is automatically moved to the end of the first round.
No signing of buyout players: Teams cannot sign players who have been bought out by other teams.

Luxury Tax Penalties
Spoiler:
The NBA luxury tax threshold for the 2025-26 season is $187.895 million

Standard luxury tax penalties
$0–5 million over the tax line: $1.50 per dollar
$5–10 million over the tax line: $1.75 per dollar
$10–15 million over the tax line: $2.50 per dollar
$15–20 million over the tax line: $3.25 per dollar
Over $20 million: The penalty per dollar increases by $0.50 for every additional $5 million over the threshold.

Repeat offender luxury tax penalties (exceeded the tax line in three of the previous four seasons)
$0–5 million over the tax line: $2.50 per dollar
$5–10 million over the tax line: $2.75 per dollar
$10–15 million over the tax line: $3.50 per dollar
$15–20 million over the tax line: $4.25 per dollar
Over $20 million: The penalty per dollar increases by $0.50 for every additional $5 million over the threshold.
Must be below tax line for two consecutive years to reset repeat offender penalties

If you are speaking specifically about this year they can't go over the 2nd apron because they used the taxpayer mid-level exception on Yabu which triggered a hard cap at the 2nd apron.

The Celtics were in an extreme situation where they may have been more concerned with the tax bill than the restrictions that come with being above the 2nd apron. I think it was reported that if they kept the roster together this year with the tax penalties it would have cost them around $500M for the roster this year and i'm not even sure that would have included re-signing guys like Hortford and Kornet. That's a lot of money for a team that was already showing signs of decline before the Tatum injury.

I believe the Knicks could become a repeat offender as far as the luxury tax next season after being over the threshold this season and last season. The luxury tax threshold is projected to be $201,690,000 for next season with the Knicks already having $206M committed to just 9 players not including Mitch or any other potential additions. The 2nd apron is projected to be around $223M.

I'm not sure how big of a deal going over the 2nd apron will be next season. If they were over the 2nd apron this summer the biggest difference as far as roster construction would have been not being able to offer Yabu more than the vet-min which would have possibly forced the team to go after another player while opening up room for another vet-min and the Giannis rumors ending for the year as they would not be able to combine salaries or take in his larger salary in a trade.

If they were over the 2nd apron the previous year they would not have been able to combine salaries to make the KAT deal and they would have had to send out a bigger salary than Mikal's (Randle or Brunson) if they wanted to complete that deal.

Mavs will shop AD.

If we can pair AD and KAT. That is absolutely dangerous. Would something below work?

McBride
Hart
Dadiat
Yabu
Kolek

still short on the money side but if this was the frame work? Would we be a better team?

Brunson
Bridges
OG
AD
KAT

That starting line up is serious on the 2 way defense and offense side of the ball. AD and KAT compliment so well.

If you trade KAT to a team or get a bunch of 1sts for him , and can spin it into Giannis or JJJ. This team will be ready for war.

Brunson is not a good defensive player but he is the identity of the team , best scorer and one of most clutch players in the NBA. He obviously isn't going anywhere.

However and as much as I like KAT , having him and Brunson playing major minutes while a bit more mitigated in Browns system, is still sub ideal. If you turn that player from a pretty big negative defensively to a pretty big positive defensively, that is a MONSTER swing to just about perfect roster construction.

In Browns system we are a legit finals team out of the weak east right now. I love this team as is but I dont know if we beat 1 or 2 teams in the West ....but theres a chance. However you sub KAT for Giannis or JJ and we would be the odds on favorite to win the whole thing.

Who can we afford to get at the trade deadline by putting Yabu in the ejector seat?

Would AD stay healthy enough for that to work?
