Is Scottie like the defensive JALEN JOHNSON?

Post#1 » by MessiahUjiri » Fri Nov 14, 2025 6:22 am

Normally, Scottie gets talked about more compared to Jalen Johnson, who plays under Trae’s shadow in Atlanta, and dealt with some past injuries.

But look closely:

Johnson:
21 pts / 9 rb / 6 ast

Barnes:
20 pts / 7 rb / 5 ast

Scottie is a better defender / blocker, but offensively, you can make the case that if Johnson had the ball as much as Scottie does, his stats would be higher.

No one says Johnson is a franchise player, then why do people think that Scottie is him?

One of the most contrarian things for long term winning would be to see if there’s a trade for Scottie at the deadline. Pre-empt the Giannis bids. You can see Spurs need someone like him.
170,000+ killed and injured in Gaza.

But Palestine lives strong in our hearts.

You don't trade Scottie, you build around him. That was obvious from very early on in his career.
At least to me it was obvious.

But Johnson does have franchise player potential; he just got derailed by an injury so the hype has quieted on him. He's very good though.

Johnson is a crappy role player. Don't ever put them in the same sentence ever again.

Am I crazy? I have Barnes on a entirely different level then Johnson.

Jalen was considered top 10 even top 5 draft prospect but somehow fell to 20 because of injury

He had a higher ceiling than scottie particularly on the offensive end

Johnson has only played in 58% of the possible games he could have played, missing a whopping 144 games already. The way he left Duke also left a sour taste in people's minds and mouths. Some Hawks fans DO speak of him being a franchise player, which is why a lot of them are fine moving on from Young.

The Barnes comment is a strawman, nobody thinks he's a franchise player anymore, save for like 1 poster here (and our media, who share the same employer).

I get that a lot of our fans don't like Scottie, but this is not going to happen anytime soon. I do admire some of you trying your best to speak trading him into existence. That is what this site is for, after all.

Atlanta doesn’t do that trade and Raps don’t either.

They’re both studs, no real need to pit them against each other. Calling JJ a role player is hilarious though, he’ll probably get an all star nod if he continues to carry Atlanta.

If you watch JJ play, he has a lot bigger offensive ability than Scottie....particularly that Atlanta Hawks game
The ball-handling, shooting, and passing is a tier up.

Say for Deni (with Blazers), that guy doesn't average 26 ppg in a tough western conference for no good reason. Really good

Johnson would have gone a lot higher in the draft if there weren't injury concerns. There were also concerns about his circle. I recall some said he could have returned from injury in college but decided (or was advised) not to and just wait for the draft. Probably a reasonable business decision but it also hurt his stock. I always loved his game and thought he would be a stud in NBA but Scottie is better. Scottie still has a chance to have the best career in a very deep draft. He is a 2-way beast. Too many people only look at stat sheets. JJ isn't sharing the ball with 3 other offence first players atm.

Nah I disagree. Scottie wouldn’t be able to do what JJ does on Atlanta. Scottie gets better with more talented offensive players around him. He wouldn’t be able to be lift an offence from the mud like Jalen Johnson can with the Hawks right now.

We saw it last year, Scottie had a miserable time handling that offensive load. Scottie’s magic power is being a multiplier, hes a super connector.

I remember when people were saying that Ochai, Walter, and BI was better return for Siakam than a hypothetical JJ trade.

And to emphasize this point, on the same night that Barnes put up an amazing: 28pts/10rbs/8ast/5blks

Jalen puts up an even more amazing: 31pts/18rbs/14ast/7stls

Not bad for a "crappy role player."

Imagine giving up on a prospect like that after just 4 seasons. The Wizards truly are the definition of a poverty franchise. I wish we'd have tried to get him.

The best part is that their fans are so deluded they think that trading him for peanuts was a good move.

I'd rather not compare what a player does against the Jazz than what a player does against the Cavaliers. Not knocking Johnson at all, I think he is a franchise player and if I were Atlanta, I'd be looking to swap Trae, but come on, numbers are about opportunity, and the opportunity to dominate the Jazz (and Kessler is gone for the season) is far greater than dominating the Cavs with their twin bigs and all the effort that has to go into coping with Donovan Mitchell. (Jusef Nurkic has a D rating of something like 109 - he sucks.)

In fact, one of the challenges of having good teammates is balancing your contribution, not taking all the shots that present themselves, and spreading things around so the opposition can't focus overly on you.

And let's not ignore just how impactful Scottie is with blocks and deflections.

Read on Twitter

But that's all we seem to get on this board. Demeaning our own players is half the content here. Every one of them sucks, all of them are overpaid and should be traded, although CMB is definitely going to be the next Draymond Green

What you saw last year is a team not trying to compete and atlanta is way better than the raps were last year with Atls current squad. Put barnes on the hawks right now and they are just fine. JJ gets to play with 2 spacing bigs

Lauri also went for 40 against JJ while Mobley/Allen had under 11.

That's what his defense is like. That's nothing to gloss over, right now he has the same weakness as trae young and he's most hated
