Barnes and Shead are the heart and soul of this team. Everytime they come in, they change the momentum of the games. In fact, I’d include many, cmb, and gradey for playing with energy and urgency; Jakob has been solid not forcing the action and being a consistent finisher at the rim (have to improve those free throws but the hack-a-poetl had him hit consecutive shots: so it’s mainly mental with him). Fun team to watch and root for.

Tbh I feel like we're almost like a poorman's OKC lol like we have most of the depth & defence but no superstar like Shai at the head of the snake to actually help take the team over the top. Feels almost "post-championship" 2020 squad to me...obv those guys likely performed better in that season than this team will this year. I just mean it feels like we're a really good team BUUUUT yet again we don't have THAT guy/superstar as the crown jewel to really complete things.
I'm not hating or upset about it because ofc unlike that team, that was a bunch of older vets & had completed the cycle vs this where it's just really the beginning and it's a bunch of younger players for the most part. It just feels like it will definitely be a fun season and one you can't help but cheer them on for....buuuut also just can't help but think how are they gonna improve their ceiling long terms especially when the teams that are down this year are likely to come back like gangbusters next year (w/ the exception of ATL who NOP doing it for them and might cash in on Trae to top it off).
I think short term goal is to be a playoff team first, and then a consistent playoff team. I'm thinking of the Lowry-DeRozan years. Build up asset values and keep flipping them for other good assets to keep the team rolling until a superstar is available on the market we can try to swing for.
Unfortunately, draft wise we missed out on the generational player this decade, which is Wemby. I don't think we're going to find someone like that in the next couple of drafts for a while, so you might as well compete and build up assets.

Correction: we missed out on the CHANCE of the generational player this decade. Remember...it's a lottery. Nothing is a given. Teams like Washington have been bad for how many years? How many #1 picks they get?

They've had the #1 overall pick twice in the 3pt era, selecting Kwame Brown and John Wall. But they've had a top-6 pick in that same timeframe 10 times. They also took Deni Avdija in 2020 and then traded him after the 23-24 season for Malcolm Brogdon and Carlton Carrington, and some seconds. Oh, and they also gave up a trade exception.

This has to be our path. We can't really rush it. Contention is, in large part, about luck in terms of opportunity to make trades or select generational stars and such. But we can be really good for a while if we can just keep moving forward and building on what we have, adding bargain talent and such.

True...and yet they have won zero championships in that time. Tanking is never a sure thing.

I had them barely winning 40 games this year. This is a much more positive trend.

This place is insufferable.

Honestly we're already in a better position than those DD/Lowry years. Those teams all had gaping holes in the starting lineups that this team doesn't have. Even Val wasn't really playable as a fulltime starter cuz he was so targetted on D.
The rest of the starting lineups:
12/13:
JVal: 20yrs, 47gs, 23.9mpg, -1.2bpm
Bargs: 27yrs, 25gs, 28.7mpg, -2.7bpm / Amir: 25yrs, 38gs, 28.7mpg, +1.0bpm
Jose: 31yrs, 30gs, 28.3mpg, +3.6bpm / Gay: 26yrs, 32gs, 34.7mpg, +1.9bpm
13/14:
JVal: 21yrs, 81gs, 28.2mpg, -1.3bpm
Amir: 26yrs, 72gs, 28.8mpg, +0.7bpm
Gay: 27yrs, 18gs, 35.5mpg, +0.6bpm / Ross: 22yrs, 62gs, 26.7mpg, -0.2bpm
14/15:
JVal: 22yrs, 80gs, 26.7mpg, +0.5bpm
Amir: 27yrs, 72gs, 26.4mpg, -0.1bpm
Ross: 23yrs, 61gs, 25.5mpg, -1.4bpm
15/16:
Jval: 23yrs, 59gs, 26.7mpg, +1.7bpm
Scola: 35yrs, 76gs, 21.5mpg, -1.1bpm
Carroll: 29yrs, 22gs, 30.2mpg, +0.3bpm
16/17:
JVal: 24yrs, 80gs, 25.8mpg, +0.3bpm
Siak: 22yrs, 38gs, 15.6mpg, -2.4bpm / Ibaka: 27yrs, 23gs, 31.0mpg, -1.5bpm
Carroll: 30yrs, 72gs, 26.1mpg, 0.0bpm
17/18:
JVal: 25yrs, 77gs, 22.2mpg, +2.3bpm
Ibaka: 28yrs, 76gs, 27.5mpg, -0.1bpm
OG: 10yrs, 62gs, 20.0mpg, -0.6bpm
While this year already the only starter under 31mpg is Poeltl and that's mostly due to injury. And all the starters are likely to be positive players in those fulltime starting minutes.

Yep. As you said, just a chance at some talent working out. In theory, it's a pretty good chance, but it's even less sure than ever in the 1-and-done era. And there are always injuries and prospects who don't pan out and, and, and... All the stuff we all know.
Compared to their run of awfulness, I'm thrilled that we're only in our third season since our last year at or above .500, man. Washington's fans are troopers.

Washington is playing better but just needs help with one more top 3 pick. Coulibaly has floundered harder than Dick.
PG Carrington
SG Peterson - Riley
SF Trey - Coulibaly
PF Kyshawn - Kispert
C Sarr - Whitemore

Right. And they've won less than 20 games in each of the last two seasons, and have started out 1-11 so far this year. Their D is "all-time worst" type level at the moment, and their offense is as bad as it was last year. 2018 was the last time they won more than 35 games, they gave up on Avdija, who is flourishing so far this year in Portland...
It's just rough. Sarr looks better but they don't have a lot of other stuff going on at the moment which is really exciting. I'm much happier with our situation, honestly.

I mean...we are better than the Hornets. That's gotta mean something...lol. Kon Knueppel looks good though. Otherwise...that franchise is cursed. That's a franchise that has had a lottery pick in every draft since 2004 except for 2016 (and yet they still missed the playoffs that year too!!!). Proof that no matter how many lottery picks you have...if you have bad management and bad luck...you can still suck.
Be happy we aren't the Charlotte LOLcats/Hornets.
Just for fun.......
2025 - Kon Knueppel
2024 - Tidjane Saluan
2023 - Brandon Miller
2022 - Jalen Duren ---> traded for #15 pick - Mark Williams (ouch...that was dumb!!!)
2021 - James Bouknight
2020 - Lamelo Ball
2019 - PJ Washington
2018 - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ---> traded for #12 pick - Miles Bridges (ouch...that was dumb!!!!)
2017 - Malik Monk
2016 - no lottery pick for whatever reason...but did select Malachi Richardson at 22 then traded him
2015 - Frank Kaminsky
2014 - Noah Vonleh
2013 - Cody Zeller
2012 - Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
2011 - Kemba Walker
2010 - no draft picks at all
2009 - Gerald Henderson
2008 - DJ Augustin
2007 - Brandan Wright ---> traded to GSW for Jason Richardson (not his rookie year)
2006 - Adam Morrison
2005 - Raymond Felton
2004 - Emeka Okafor

And the chance is worse with the new flattened odds. Both their first overall picks came before the NBA changed the lottery rules

Yes, between the flattened odds and mostly drafting 19 year-olds, it's a highly volatile process, much more so than in the past.

Wait is this right? Isn’t the starting lineup either a minus currently or just at 0? Where are you getting this plus 14.9 from? I also remember reading somewhere that the starting lineup with CMB instead of Poeltl was also a minus but you have plus 5.7

Wait is this right? Isn’t the starting lineup either a minus currently or just at 0? Where are you getting this plus 14.9 from? I also remember reading somewhere that the starting lineup with CMB instead of Poeltl was also a minus but you have plus 5.7
Look up top those are stats for this 8gm streak.

After a 30 win season last year, I'm trying to be a realist and objective with this team. but man, it's so hard not to get excited about this team now and not be optimistic about the future.
