At his height we should never expect him to play more than 70 games

He played more than 70 games in his first season. His blood clot issue that forced him out last season had nothing to do with being tall.
Getting kinda irritated with all the "he's injury prone" talk in this thread. Dude had no real injures his rookie season and was held out of those 11 games for minor stuff/precaution. Played in the Olympics without issue. Played last season without issue until a non-basketball injury derailed his season. Now he has a calf strain which SA is going to be extremely cautious about and suddenly he's Ralph Sampson or Greg Oden and he's never going to play a full season in his career?

Re: [Charania] Wemby left calf strain expected to miss few weeks
I understand people are freaked out but it's seemingly just a minor calf strain about which the Spurs are being very cautious about. (There is also a league wide PTSD from calf injuries so that probably makes the Spurs even more cautious about Victor)
The idea that he's now seemingly a super injury prone who will never play even 75 games a year is quite frankly an overreach given that he was mostly healthy in his rookie year (And held out only as precaution and/or tank purposes) and then a freak issue made him sit out post ASB in his 2nd year (And the cause for said issue was treated as well).
There is a chance he'll always have to be load managed somewhat, but I don't think it's gonna be anything more than the usual for NBA superstars these days.

The dude is 21, Ralph Sampson and Yao weren't injury prone at 21 either.

As his career progresses and more miles are put on him, he won't be a guy who plays a lot of games. Go look at all the guys who were 7'4 and up in NBA history and were mobile like Wemby, most of them weren't exactly ironmen.

Okay...? People are already insinuating he's going to end up like them because of a calf strain.

None of them had a body like Victor and honestly there is such a small sample of dude's over 7'4" in NBA history that ever had big roles that it's impossible to draw any meaningful conclusions

No, they're insinuating he's going to end up like them because of his huge 7'5 frame and the lack of precedent for human beings with it having a long and healthy career on his level of usage. Let alone with his playing style. You don't have to be a doctor to see the obvious risks and higher likelihood that he develops chronic issues. No one expects it because of one injury.

Wemby has freakish agility for his size. Kind of reminds me of KD in that regard. Hopefully that helps negate some injury risk.

We know why people sit out when they get one… Achilles injuries…
I don’t wish this on anyone but it’s a lower body on a big man and it’s a injury that scares twitchy players … does rest fix this?

I really hope this is not an issue for him his entire career.
Always a concern when a dude is 7'5.

I think Kareem learned when he was young, to start playing below the rim. His biggest defense was to turn and put his hip into you. Probably explains his longevity.

I mean Kareem was a freak.
He played 82, 82, 81, 76, 81, 65, 82, 82, 62, 80, 82, 80, 76, 79, 80, 79, 79, 78, 80 and 74 games in his career, that's 95% of games he was healthy for.

Re: [Charania] Wemby left calf strain expected to miss few weeks
Victor was at practice this morning doing his normal dribble exercises with no boot or anything on his calf. He's fine. Spurs are just being cautious. Compare that to Harper who immediately had to come out of the game because of discomfort and was in a walking boot for like 10 days. Wemby continued playing the game after he got injured. So he's probably going to be fine and the Spurs, understandably, are exercising caution with their young superstar. Nothing to worry about imho

Safety > sorrow.
He'll still be eligible for awards/honors if he only misses a few weeks, too.

The 65 games is fine. 17 games missed is 20% of a season. What good are a players abilities if he can't offer AVAILability?

This might be good for Spurs as Victor will never get paid max money.
1. Spurs already have way too many wins to tank for Dybantsa, the team that drafts him will likely have no more than 15 wins
2. You could tell the Spurs Wemby is only good for 45 games a year and he's still getting max money
I think he meant the supermax

That's understandable, but also shouldn't potentially screw him out of hitting the 65 game qualifier if he's not actually hurt. But sounds like good news that it's the mildest of mild.
For the people that keep saying "he needs to play differently to prevent these", doesn't matter how you play you have guys like Podz making dirty leg sweeps.

This is why he definitely will not break any block records though. Durability and availability is just not a thing franchises can count on with star players anymore.
