2025 Blue Jays Offseason Thread

First big sign that the Jays are going all-in this offseason, which they absolutely should be doing.

Cease easily had the best stuff of any FA pitcher on the market, I bet they think they can get even more out of him.

Crochet who is arguably the best pitcher in MLB, signed a 6 year 170 million deal with Boston last year. I like Cease, but 6 years in the 150 million range was my max for him.

Talk about an overpay for a guy whose numbers are nowhere good as Crochet. That is what this front office does best. Overpay for players like Santander, Gimenez, and now Cease.

Crochet was still in club control. Totally different scenario to sign a guy straight outta FA. I think Blue Jays probably overpaid by a year to get it done. But it's not a crazy overpay by any means. Most FA value models are saying that this a good deal. Cease has legit ace stuff and his strikeout stuff is exactly what you want in the playoffs. I'm excited to see how our pitching coaches get to work with him.

Rotation is likely set unless Scherzer/Bassitt want to come back on a discount in more of a 5th starter/swingman role.

Sign one of Bo/Tucker/Bellinger/Bregman, shore up the Bullpen and we are likely done.

I feel like they eating berrios contract, I think something happened at end of season.

Putting out a scenario.

1. Let's say Bassitt wants to stay here and takes something like 2/20. Who knows if that is something that he is interested in.
2. You then eat $40M of the Berrios contract and move him on to some team (new team pays him 3/25)... so you can save 25 million over 3 years, which is basically funding the Bassitt contract.

In the end you are paying almost the same total money but for Bassitt instead of Berrios.

Honestly, I'm not even that worried about the extra year. He'll be 36 when his contract ends, and he's got good movement which he can leverage even if things slow down by a couple of clicks in that final year.

I mean, none of us know what Ed's number is. Anybody (other than Ed, Shapiro, or Atkins) who tells you they know what his number is, is lying to you.

It's entirely possible that he won't want to spent the money to get another elite arm in the rotation. But it's not something that I'd bet my life on, at all.

Remember when Pat Gillick refused to offer 4 years to any pitcher. Due to injury risk. Lol. We lost Jimmy Key to the Yankees for that reason. Times have changed.

Yup, we sure do. Our 2nd and 5th picks. And if we sign Tucker, we'll also lose our 3rd and 6th picks. (After that, we can sign as many QO players without penalty, if we really wanted to).

If somebody else signs Bo, we get a pick after the 4th round.

They got that influx of playoff money, did a cost comparison to contracts and want to cash in the next 2-3 years. I like it.

We overpaid Cease by 4M per and 1-2 year in length. But there is no salary cap and we got an ace - that's a lot better than overpaying fringe players like Tanner Roark, Chad Green, Santander etc.

We overpaid Russell Martin too back in the 2015-2016 run, and it was definitely worth it.

Unless we have a trade lined up for Berrios, it most certainly takes us out of the running for Imai.
