not from a financial standpoint. Hes on a vet minimum deal. getting his money off the books is meaningless
not from an on court standpoint because he was barely playing.
not from a roster flexibility option because they literally cant waive him. the current CBA dictates that teams must have 14 teams minimum, and thats what the Clippers have with CP3. They cant waive him they can only send him home. Now, they can sign another player to make 15 roster spots and THEN cut him, or they can trade him. those are the options

The "benefit" of releasing him is attempting to fix a toxic locker room. The fact that they couldnt even wait for the team to end the road trip and get back to LA shows you that the front office didnt think they would survive the road trip without collapsing into complete and utter chaos where Harden gets into fat Harden mode and demands a trade, Kawhi goes dark, etc. So they're hoping the team will rally around getting his negativity out of the locker room. Now, do I think that was the move? I dont think so. Clippers fans are pissed off. Media is jumping all over this. Retired players are talking about how its a bad look. This was a miscalculation on Frank's part in my opinion. Unless CP3 was literally about to get into serious trouble legally or publicly its incredibly stupid to cut a fan favorite, arguably the top player in the history of the team, in the middle of the night on the road a few days after he announced he plans to retire with your team. its a bad look

#1 Lakers, stays in LA and chases with buddy LeBron.
#2 OKC, been there before and ties to SGA.
#3 Denver, Needs another player who can create when Jokic isn't on the floor... also a top 3 team in the league

#4 Timberwolves, The team needs leadership. No team has a bigger hole at PG, so he’d get serious minutes for the rest of the season and the playoffs. He could unlock Gobert, with his experience running pick and roll with DeAndre Jordan. He could pass on knowledge to Ant and Dillingham. MIN has a partially guaranteed vet min deal (Bones Hyland) that helps hardcapped LAC.

The Wolves need a point guard desperately( Conley looked washed last time I saw him) but Paul at this stage in career isn’t it. I would like to be proven wrong by him. He was a great vet for the Spurs last year. Dillingham could get a lot of insight and development from Paul.

38yo Conley > 40yo Paul imo, though they are both looking pretty done. Lol. But Conley has always been a great teammate (he's won numerous teammate awards), and is someone that coaches find helpful rather than adversarial. Probably both old man Joe Ingles and old man Conley are still on the Wolves for that reason.

I've never been a CP fan, there's a reason he jumped around with teams so much. He had a Kobe level attitude without the Kobe level hardware or accolades to back it up.

Talented, sure, but he never did anything of significance in his career outside of put up good stats and berate teammates over missed assignments. If he hadn't calmed that down when he's in year 20 and barely NBA playable anymore... I would have booted him too, even if he was a fan favorite. By this age and this diminished of a skill level, you need to be pivoting to that mentorship nurturing role, not being a Grade A prick to the coaches and teammates because of missed assignments or schemes you don't agree with.

Paul was one of the dirties, floppiest and whiniest players in the NBA to go along with being a complete red ass in the lockerroom.

I could care less the Clippers waived him. He did it too himself, he could have gracefully went off into the sunset on the team he had the longest tenure with, but instead just was acting like he was still 2013 CP3. I'll never understand why people put him in so high regard as one of the Top 3 (for some people GOAT) PGs of all time.

I just listened to the Lou Williams interview and it seems like it might not just be CP3 being a dick. Lou Will reported that CP3 had been critical of the team but that he went about it in a respectful way. He said the final straw was when CP3 went after the front office. Now who knows what that means. If CP3 was criticizing their signings (and by association criticizing/implying some of the current players are bad/washed) then CP3 probably deserves to go. But if the Lou Will reporting is correct (he seems to be plugged into the Clippers) it doesn’t seem like a case of Paul just being a dick if he was actually being respectful and putting forth constructive criticism.

Chris paul wouldn't have had to issue an apology at some point if he was going about it respectfully. Which has been reported.

This is just a player standing up for another player.
