We've been watching St. Denis Medical as our go-to when nothing else appeals to us. It's "small chuckle" funny, but it hasn't been laugh-out-loud hilarious yet.

Anyone here watch The Paper? Trying to figure out if that's worth a shot.

Is it super-gory?

I love King, but, ironically, gore really isn't my thing at all.

It isn't consistently gory from one episode to the next, but probably every other episode has had me nearly needing to cover my eyes and I am generally pretty good about that kinda thing lol. The gore doesn't look super realistic so maybe that could help? But something about it looking fake actually grosses me out more with this show.

My daughter (18) watches the Paper. It’s an Office spin off. It’s probably another small chuckle funny based on your assessment of St. Denis Medical. Harmless and not edgy, maybe slightly milquetoast? Domhall Gleason is in it, I like him as any actor. He’s the straight man.

My two cents? Meh.

I figured as much when I saw the ads for it. You'd think the ads would pull you in, but the only smile it brought me was seeing Oscar again, and that's not enough to make me watch it.

St. Denis is similar, though I do like David Alan Grier and some of the supporting characters are funny. It's got potential. They just need to kick it up a notch with some of the edginess and absurdity that made the Office so good.

Have been watching Stranger Things from start to finish with my boys. Its not prestige TV in the mode of HBO masterpieces like Sopranos or Deadwood. But its surely one of the most fun tv shows that holds broad appeal to multi age audiences. Cringey acting at times, but also some good performances. The sets, casting, writing, and pacing are typically very good. I think had they filmed/released them all in a row, it would have been much more popular. I think I stopped watching midway through season four. All in all, Im surprised how much we’re enjoying it.

See the Kill Bill directors cut if you can in the theatre. 4.5 hours felt like an hour. I'm gonna miss movies and movie theatres.

The Running Man (2025) was okay. I don't think it knew what it wanted to be, though. It was missing the humor ad fun of an Edgar Wright film, and there was no worthwhile villain to speak of. That last part was especially egregious. Going from Richard Dawson and the Stalkers to Josh Brolin playing Josh Brolin and a masked Lee Pace was an absolutely terrible decision. Doomed the movie.

Don't know what guys think but this was a brutal year for movies IMO. Black Bag, OBAA, 28 YL, and Companion were my favorites. Sinners probably there with them. After that a lot of mediocrity.

All time awful year for movies, I'm struggling to remember a worse year. The consensus best films of the year are literally all C tier flicks at their absolute best and nothing I would desire to ever own physically let alone watch a 2nd time. I have over 500 physical blu rays and 4ks, and you would have to pay me hundreds of dollars to even consider sitting down and wasting the time to watch Sinners again or the ultra pompous mess that was OBAA. OBAA hype and acclaim felt like douchey self important film critics wanting to give PTA a lifetime achievement award for a movie before the movie even came out and before they even saw it.

If the NBA draft were all the movies released in a year, OBAA would be Zaccarie Risascher.

And I'm sure someone will go :o at me owning physical copies of movies, but the sound AND picture quality of even a regular blu ray is soooooooooo much better than "streaming in 4k" it's actually insane.

Physical is the way to go. Plus I think some streaming platforms can remove a movie you buy if they lose the licensing, so you don't really "own" it.

Yep, if you "buy" a digital movie on Amazon lets say, they can either lose the license, censor parts of the movie if asked to by the govt, or just choose to remove it from their platform. In all cases the consumer is screwed and you lose access to the movie and you don't get refunded. If you buy digitally you are merely leasing the movie AND it's contingent on you subscribing to the service as well. Also, if the streaming service were to go out of business and not exist or get sold to another entity you lose out as well.

Further, used blu rays have been exceptionally cheap at resale stores. Up until the last year they were consistently cheaper than even renting a movie on Amazon, $2-$4 basically. Now most are pricier in $5-$10 range but it's still a better value proposition than digital purchase. I do buy new as well, but that's typically reserved for criterion collection 50% off sale or a 4k release of something special.

This is basically how I felt about 2024. 2025 was great by comparison for my taste at least.
