His rebounding has been unbelievable this season. And he is doing his usual 0 turnovers thing. It's a real shame his 3-ball isn't falling though. Last year, when he was wide open, he tended to knock them down at a respectable level. This year, I have zero confidence that any 3 he launches will go in. He is shooting just 22.5%. Nevertheless, he has been one of our best players this season.

Agree -- & if/when the 3 starts falling again (wch, IMO, it'd even be fine for him to save until next year! :)) he'll be a real weapon!

Justin Champagnie makes me want to see Bilal Coulibaly traded.

I am sure that is myopic, but Justin seems to be the anti-Bilal, who rarely rebounds and is a terrible three-point shooter. Bilal might snap back and perform better suddenly as Bub Carrington has, but I do not think he will ever be an all-effort lunch pail guy like Justin Champagnie is.

Over the last 4 games, Justin has posted a 63.6% TS% while averaging almost 15 rebounds per 40 minutes. I'd say that's pretty good, wouldn't you?

If I did my math correctly, the Wizards are 16-26 over the last 2 seasons when Justin plays at least 17 minutes and 11-72 when he doesn’t.

Since December 1st, here are his per 36 numbers:
14.9 points
12.2 rebounds :o
1.7 assists
1.5 blocks
1.4 steals
0.9 turnovers :o
.590 TS%
.349 3P%

His statistical profile looks more like a center than a wing. His numbers are similar to Goga Bitadze or Neemias Queta, only he can spread the floor and switch 1 through 4.

Plus, since he posted a .614 TS% last year, we might look for that to go up even further as the year progresses.

This is a very very good NBA player we've got!

I wish there was a way to give him a bonus or perhaps some other way to show him we appreciate his consistent and positive contribution. His performance far exceeds the value of his contract.

In Summer 2024, he signed a contractthat pays him:
2024-25: $1.8M
2025-26: $2.3M
2026-27: $2.7M
2027-28: $3.0M

This summer, we are allowed to extend him for any cost up to the MLE. So that's one option. Just lock him into two more years in 2028-29 and 2029-30 for something like $8M a year. (Just spit-balling on a figure. The actual figure would be whatever you could get his agent to agree to.)

A better option would be to renegotiate his contract. You can't renegotiate until after Year 3, so we would only be renegotiating that final year. But if, for example, he agreed to two more years at $8M per year as outlined above, we could incorporate that raise into the final year of his current contract. So instead of getting paid $3M in 2027-28, $8M in 2028-29, and $8M in 2029-30, we could just pay him $6.3M in all 3 seasons to get him to the same total. Even better would be to make it descending so it's $6.8M, $6.3M and $5.8M in each of those years respectively. That frontloads his salary when we presumably will have more cap room, and minimizes the hit when it comes time to resign guys like Sarr, Tre, Kyshawn and our 2026 FRP.

Champagnie is someone we should keep around. The younger players clearly like him and he has great energy and plays above himself in the paint.

He’s been a bright spot for a down year so far.

Justin had a great season last year, & this year, overall, his numbers are ever so slightly better. In fact, his numbers this season are just a as good overall as Deni Avdija's !

Now... before you get exercised... no one would claim he's as valuable a player as Deni. He's not.

Yet, it's closer than you might think, even though Deni scores way more points. After all, to assess a player you can't just look at how many points he scores. You have to look at what it costs the team for the player to get those points.

Along those lines, we can't ignore the fact that to get 13 more points than Justin per 36 minutes, Deni turns the ball over @ 3 more times than Justin & gets @.6 fewer steals, while Justin also gets almost 3 more offensive rebounds than Deni. In other words, evey 36 minutes Deni gives the opponent 6.5 extra shots that Justin does not give the opponent. Take that in, because it's a fact.

Thus -- since, using the NBA average, 6.5 extra shots turns into 7.3 extra points -- when you look at how many more points than Justin Deni scores, remember to add to Justin's points the ones he prevents the opponent from scoring.

Now... is Justin Champagnie as good a player as Deni Avdija? Of course not! But he's a ton better player than people seem to think! The numbers comparo with Deni is useful in making that obvious.

AS well, it's interesting that both these guys are incredible bargains on their current contracts! :)

I would restate this as follows:

Champagne is playing his role as well as, or perhaps even better than Deni is playing his role. But the skillset to handle Deni's role is a much rarer skillset to find. So I would not say that Champagnie is better than Deni.

Based on roles, I don't see any basis to choose between them. Deni is clearly a star in this league. Justin is clearly not.

& yet, to illustrate how the small the differences are between NBA players, it's perfectly clear that if Justin & his twin brother Julian played Deni two on one, the twins would win every time!

Why did Justin only play 15 minutes last night? Did he get injured?
