Hannes Steinbach
Curious what people think of him. Putting up big numbers as a freshman. 18 and 12, couple of assists in there, 2 stocks.
Big enough to play Center or would he slot in as a PF?
Any comps?

Aesthetically he reminds me most of Vucevic. He's physically ahead of Vuc at same age and producing at a much higher level so far though.
Hannes strength and hands are elite, but I do have positional, athletic and defensive concerns.

I only watched him once but i was disappointed watching him try to contest shots. Looks like he cant jump at all.

Had a couple really good games but looks like maybe he's falling off a bit.

Re: Hannes Steinbach
I would say he is in the mix for me as a top 5 pick right now.
Darkhorse #1 pick in this draft.
Wouldn't say he has falling off.
Last two games are 20/11 in a win vs Utah.
21/14 in just 27 mins vs San Diego.
Shot 19 Free throws in those two games, shot 4 threes, 7 stocks.
Currently averaging 18/12/2 on 58/46/76 shooting splits.

I don't know why you guys have to reach for so much hyperbole on this board all the time. There is zero chance that he is better than the top three in this class. Absolutely none. He's not a good enough athlete. But I have him as a mid to late lottery pick. 8-12 right now. Offense is important and he's a solid stretch big who can grab rebounds.

Must groupthink!!! The top 3 in the preseason must be top 3 by end of the year!!! AHHHHHH
I mean it is December, there are 6 more months before the draft lol.
I am not going to pretend to know exactly how the college season finishes.
I would agree that the top 3 guys are probably more likely to go ahead of him. Hence the words Darkhorse.
Steinbach is already a guy that is shooting up draft boards.
NBA teams love drafting bigs high, often #1 overall.
Would not shock me at all if he was in discussion to go top 3 by the end of it but also wouldn't shock me if the top 3-4 guys go chalk. Lots of possibilities at this point.

6-11 with this long list of weaknesses, who could ever draft him top 5.

Re: Hannes Steinbach
He's played one ranked team. How many future NBA players has he gone up against? Not many I would think.
Kingston Flemings wasn't in the first round on any mocks prior to the season. It isn't group think that has him top 10 now.
If Hannes plays well against ranked team he can certainly go top 10 but top 5 is probably a reach.

Re: Hannes Steinbach
Do not see it whatsoever with him
He can’t guard 5s… can he even play 5? Can he shoot at all, at the NCAA level he’s a non-3-point shooter. Subsisting off an outlier OREB%. He’s definitely talented but late lottery talented, not top 10.
How is he meaningfully better than Mo Wagner?

Kid can play and knows how to use his body. High IQ.
He’s the type of player that you don’t over think it with. He will produce day one. You need a good defensive C next to him. Lots of teams going double big lineups to pound the glass for offensive rebounds. He’s elite at OREB. Think he will be a good shooter too. His form looks good.

Double big lineups make sense if one of them stretches the floor. If this guy is crashing the glass he is not also going to be a stretch 4. You can't be in two places at once. So which is he? Double big lineups only really make sense if one of them can shoot. If this guy doesn't shoot then you will need a stretch 5 that can also protect the rim. This is not easy team building.
One of the reasons you draft a guy high is that he's easy to build around. In your description of Steinbach it's like you're already acknowledging he will need a special team construction around him. You started by saying "don't overthink it", but you are literally having to over think it with him.

He is listed at 6'11 but last U-20 which was a couple months ago, his own country/team listed him at 6'9???
That said... given my team's history of drafting Michigan or German players, we have been keeping track of him , Reibe ( from Uconn) and that C from UVA. lol

Offense-wise he reminded me of his countryman Moe Wagner when on a heater.
Also, Steinbach is waaaaaay more athletic than what Vuc has shown me in a Magic uni. Maybe Vuc was really athletic before he was drafted?

Re: Hannes Steinbach
He was measured 6'9.5 barefoot in 2024 with a 7'1.5 wingspan and 9'1 standing reach.
He's probably 6'10, 7'2 and 9'1,5 now. Dont think he is undersized to play center in today's NBA. With the old system he would be listed as 6'11 with a 7'2 wingspan., nobody would have said that's an undersized center back then

Re: Hannes Steinbach
Yeah I don't really see a world where he has to play PF.
Maybe he isn't elite rim protector, but he is an elite rebounder and has enough perimeter talent that you can play him as a stretch 5 in the NBA.
He might not be a top 5 pick, I don't think anyone is saying that is a lock. Especially not in this class, but wouldn't shock me with his size, production and skill.

Re: Hannes Steinbach
We harp too much on actual height. At that size, being able to play C is a function of one's mentality, play style and body build. This guy is a NBA C.

Then he is bigger than our current C. That measurement is certainly a C in today's NBA.
